    It's been my experience that it is really just luck of the draw. You may go to work for a company that on paper is exactly what you want. Then you get the worst dispatcher in the company. Or a truck that won't go 2 weeks without going to the shop. Etc. Or, everything just clicks like a good Swiss clock and you're happy for years.

    Find several that offer what you want. Then choose the one that has the fewest complaints from drivers. Check RipOffReport. Do a search on here and read what drivers are saying. If you ask about a company on here, most of the responses will be from regulars on here. And many will have no experience with that company but will tell you what they heard anyway.

    So it's pretty much the basic bundle of do your research, but a crapshoot even then.

    Talk about flying blind.

    If you are looking for the phrase that pays, try calling your local radio station. If you want to get to the next tier in your career you need to make some decisions. If you want the absolute most money, be prepared to spend at least 18 days out. If you want a balance of home time and pay just about every company is the same. Talk to actual drivers of companies on your short list.

    Looking for a good mix of home life and out.

    Only money I care about is enough to be comfortable and not concern myself with what's in the bank.

    I'm happy with about a grand a week right now, improvement on that would be nice. I'm not expecting a 100k job.

    Alberta will be dead end at this time. Oil prices have depressed the driver pool. There is some very good drivers that are sitting right now. FYI

    I'm seeing lots of jobs elsewhere that don't involve the oil fields if that's what you mean.

    That's not where I'm looking. And while I don't feel comfortable doing it just yet, there are several logging truck spots open.

    Logging is a tougher gig than otr but pay is generally better and you're usually home every night. I rode with my dad in the bush as much as I could back when he owned trucks. I'd probably have a nice tri drive T800 log truck in the driveway right now if mom and dad didn't encourage me to get a trade first.

    As of right now, I'm not even in Alberta. I'd need to find a company willing to sponsor me into the country with plans to become a citizen. So that does complicate things.

    Ideally speaking though? Not anywhere in particular. I would be happy to move to where the job is at. I'd absolutely love to find someplace within a couple hours of Banff though.

    Kind of feel I have to be equally aware of companies that prey on folks that want to come into the country....... "Owing" your job is a good way to get taken advantage of.

    I've only been through Banff 2 or 3 times and I absolutely love the drive from Salmon Arm to Calgary. I've passed through Jasper every week since '09 and I'm sick of it and the tourists lol. If you want to get into logging, check out Hinton or Edson, Alberta. Hinton is about 20 minutes from Jasper's East Park Gate and they have a pretty big mill down in the Valley. Beautiful scenery there too. Edson is about another hour East of Hinton (towards Edmonton) and they have a lot of drilling companies and some logging outfits as well. Hinton to Banff via Icefields Parkway is about a 2-3 hour drive depending on traffic.
