What do I need to study to pass the permit test? Do I need to know about backing manuvers or air brakes and all that info about pre- trip inspections? Or is it about regular stuff like road signs, signals and speed limits and that type of stuff? I`m thinking of becoming a truck driver and I have the DMV CDL manual but it doesn`t tell you if you need to know all the info just to get the permit. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.:biggrin_25512:

I just took the CDL permit for Idaho. I'm from Oklahoma but chose to go to work for Willis Shaw Express. Their training center is here in Boise. We were tested over General Knowledge, Air Brakes, and Combination Vehicles. Hope this helps

Everything you need to know to get the permit is in the CDL manuals. As gwhitson said, you'll need the general knowledge, air brakes, and combination vehicle portions for your standard class A CDL permit. The backing and stuff isn't part of the written test, it's tested during the road test portion.

Grinch,Yes,you will need to know much more than just operating a CMV safely under current traffic law.The knowledge test will envolve everything related to a CMV,unlike a car.I would go back, sit down and read every section. It won't hurt to read it all but if you only wish to have a CDL A,with no airbrake restriction and no endorsements such as tanker,haz-mat,double/triples,concentrate on CDL A and airbrakes.Remember, not everything in the book will turn up on the test, but it might. Before the test, have a friend take the manual and quiz you.
