Alright, what is it that you're trying to accomplish? Make more money? Have a little more say in what you haul and where you go? What is the goal of 'knuckling down'? Curious to see if you can do it?
If you run good and strong, on the average mileage program from your average mega carrier, you will make the same amount of money as you would as a company driver. Hey, that's great, right? That's best case. When (not if) you break down or go home, the treadmill continues to turn, and you, being chained to it, get dragged along until you can figure out how you can get back up on your feet. Glorious, is it not?
Small steps, GrassHuffer. When troubleshooting for problems, fix the small things first. If your car won't start, do you check the battery and fuel and fuel pump, or do you buy an engine? What's the problem?
Bingo. You need more. Are you making a grand a week as a company driver? No? WHY NOT? Are you managing your time, making yourself available, running hard... Yes or no? What does the top driver in your company make a year? Take that amount and divide by 52. If the top driver at that company makes a grand a week, clean out your truck and jump ship. That's what the AVERAGE driver should make. You were in a slum and thought about investing money into a slum. You should thank me. You're welcome. Now if the too driver makes 65-70 k, and you're not doing a grand a week, something's wrong somewheres. We have to make sure that you are not the problem BEFORE you sign anything that involves you paying for a truck. If you're the problem and you pay for the truck, like in a LP deal, you're going to go bust. You do want to be successful, don't you? Well, success is no accident.
Of course they are. They get a free truck, and you get nothing. It's like ordering food at an expensive restaurant, never getting your food, but they still bill you. How is that beneficial for you? Don't argue, just listen. In order to be successful at lease operating, you have to be at the top of your game as a company driver. A sure way to tell is by the money you make. $1000/week minimum. If you can't figure out how to do it as a company driver, you will fail as a LP. If your company doesn't pay that well for the average driver to make a grand a week, get out of that company. You're in a sweatshop.
Would you like them if you lost money? This is business. Like money. Do you think I am being realistic when I say that every OTR road driver should be making a grand a week? Yeah, you hear that the average for drivers is under $40 k. But think about this, you hear about the LTL drivers making 80-90k a year, company driver. High end drivers make over $100k, company driver. You want to pay for a truck to net the same profit that you'd make at that bottom end company you're at, while other people don't pay for nothing yet make 2x more than you? Top drivers normally make 1.5-2x average. If there are company drivers making six figures, why aren't you making half that? Are you content being less than average? Want to be successful, bring your A Game. Tell me about how much you like your dispatcher, and I will make a good diagnosis for Stockholm Syndrome.Dale thompson, lots of character, dca and 1 other person Thank this. -
Part 2:
Excellent. The hard parts over. Let's do some homework. How do they pay owner operators and LP at your company? Percentage? Great. We're trying to work smarter not harder. That chasing miles stuff is for the guys that can't think.
How much is the truck? What's the total weekly expenses on the truck? In other words, how much are they going to deduct off your settlement? One of the games that these companies play is they tell you that your weekly truck payment will be $500-600/week, yet your weekly expenses, not including fuel is $900-1200/week.
$900x52=$46800/yr x3years =$140400. How much is the balloon payment? Depending on the company, and the truck model, balloon payments normally range from $48-78k. If you do not have the balloon payment at the end of the deal, YOU LOSE THE TRUCK.
You mean the $57.69? Yeah, it doesn't factor.
Most completion bonus' are around $3000-3500. Take $3000 and divide by 52. Quite generous.
There is a difference between a lease truck and a lease purchase truck. You can get a brand spanking new LP truck, but your lease truck is going to get 3 year use by the company driver, which increases the likelihood of you being stuck with huge repair bills. And at the end of your lease, they're going to have their shop go over the truck with a fine tooth come and deduct for every minute scratch. In other words, expect your maintenance account to hit E. You will see pillaging that would make Teach the Pirate uncomfortable.
Are you sure you don't want to stay a company driver?lots of character Thanks this. -
wow six that blackbeard reference was a mild surprise and a good chuckle
