Howdy to all who make a living on the road. I'm Doug from Vernal, UT, holding a commercial license since 1977. I don't claim to know everything, but I have spent a lot of years with my eyes and ears open and am willing to share what I have learned. I do know this: don't run a man down if he likes the outfit he works for or where he has to go. No two situations are alike, so if it works for me it might not be your thing. I know people who haul crude oil more or less local that never wanted to do anything else. I have hauled crude on several different occasions, and I would rather run to Boston than go through that again. Anyway, best of luck to all, and be careful out there.

Hi mg, I hear ya', You never know why someone stays were they are. One of my 1st T/T jobs in the late 70's, I drove for a guy, had about 20 trucks. Local stuff, but we ran hard. Drove an R model Mack, got paid peanuts (although, I was learning), but the guy was a sweetheart of a guy. He treated all of us like we were his sons. Buy you lunch, fix what ever was wrong with the truck. After a while, I began to hate the job, but I was almost afraid to tell him I was quitting, because I knew he would be upset. I worked for him for almost 5 years, until a better gig came along. Never had a deal like that ever again, and I drove for a LOT of companies.

Hi stevez, oh, we were grumpy all right, but years ago, it was the most fun job I ever had. I couldn't believe I got paid to do that. ( while my buddies were roofing houses in 90 degree heat) CB radio was king, and we had a blast. Things are so different now, it's not the same job. But I can say, remember Smokey and the Bandit or Convoy? That's exactly how it was. ( well, maybe not the Buford T. Justice character, but close)

I enjoy driving it has been my favorite thing to do and yes i still ask myself i get paid for this. I understand the anger that some drivers have. But i just thank the lord that i found something i truly enjoy. I can honestly say that i do it for the fun now that i get paid pretty decent. Well decent enough that i pay my bills and can put money in the bank and 401k. Im also planning to get my own truck beginning of next year.
