Tell him you'll bring it back for a signed letter of recommendation. Sent in advance please.
Don't screw up the equipment or give him any other reason to put a black mark against you. -
Look, crap happens! Bosses screw you over, work dissappears, contracts get underbid by other companies. Fact of life in this industry.
Take the equipment back, leave on the best terms possible in this situation, and move the heck along! You are not gonna win, so why waste your time and money fighting? The entire system is tilted in favor of the employer.
At least you can maintain your pride and professionalism, something that your next employer will hopefully appreciate. And that is far, far more important to your success than taking useless revenge against the current idiot. Is sucks that you will lose money on the deal, yes. But think of how much more you will make having moved to a better deal.Cottonmouth85 Thanks this. -
I hope you do, for your sake.
Have you calmed down? Now; get on the phone again, and find out his best offer. Was the truck issued to you in Utah or Wyoming? I ask, because it is only fair that the truck be left at the facility it was issued out of---if it was Wyoming, and he wants it in Utah yes, you deserve to get paid for taking it to him (with or without a load). If it was issued in Utah, and you feel like you can leave it in Wyoming, you are wrong, and in my eyes that is abandonment---tell him to get you a load, and make some money taking it to Utah. -
I don't think it's abandonment, even if he had originally picked it up in Utah. If his regular reporting location is in wyoming, and that's where the truck is, then he is doing right. I'm hoping that "home terminal" isn't the same place as "home", though.
The owner may choose to end the lease on the truck and stop doing that particular run instead of hiring another driver, but that is not the OPs problem.
I say bring the truck back if the owner is willing to pay for the drive, the return ticket, and the day on the bus. Otherwise, he can come get his own truck. -
Yea, he is right. Don't listen to me. I'm still young and reckless!
-
I have calmed down some. The truck was issued in Wyoming and has never been back to Utah since I have been driving it.
-
Trust me the thought crossed my mind! Maybe pull the Johnny bar a little bit and drag his brand new brakes for 7 hours. Haha! No I'm not going to mess with his stuff but it's fun to dream about.Pullin2 Thanks this.

Then (in my opinion) the truck would stay in Wyoming (if it were me)...and I would tell the owner that.
Returned to origin of issuance. End of story. No abandonment. -
I made him another offer this morning
"Email me every paystub since December. I'll send you the invoices have my final check printed including the pay for the trip back (per-diem plus 7 hours) and back pay for the 10 hours from last month. include a paystub and in Chris's hand before I leave. I'll cover the trip back. I need to leave by 2 pm today."
The 10 hours is the 10 hours he refused to pay me for hours worked. I've come a mile back to make this happen he has only moved in the opposite direction.
