Yes the rail yard is a different beast. If you want to give Intermodal a try at JB Hunt just apply for a driving job now. You may or may not get hired but right now they are still hiring drivers so it's better to try now vs waiting a few more months seeing if you can get hired on because they might not be hiring at that time. If you get hired and once you go through orientation they will put you with an experienced driver (driving about 10 years if not more) and you will go with them for few days to different customers and go to the rail yards we go to out of the Harrisburg terminal. You very likely won't go to all the rail yards like CSX in Baltimore because we don't go there all the time but you will get rail yard experience. Personally I think you should have a year experience but if you hate being OTR and want to be home everyday than you can apply and give it a shot.

Any specific intermodal companies that are regard as the best?
Im looking to get into intermodal as a company driver an after a couple of months buy my own truck.
Any specific Chicago companies that would take someone with two years driving experience but none in intermodal? -
All of them!!!!
If you want to learn, I would start with the Mega's and go from there (SNI and JB pull private chassis so, no holdups) .....O/O....I'd tell you the one I work for (Kiswani) but don't know if their taking more O/O now....I've heard decent things about Adrian Carriers...but that's about it....contact JJKid on here at TTR, he knows more local companies...call around, you might be able to get on with one that pays hourly.....Bedford Freight ....I think, there's others (check out Craigslist, but REALLY check the companies out BEFORE you sign on)....
There are plenty of bad ones around...
The best ones are local though...don't know of any national ones I would recommend..... -
Ive been stalking Craigslist for some time now looking for a company that pays hourly plus over time.
It seems that the better companies all want someone with intermodal experience. I know all the megas would take me but I know I can't go back to that type of micro managed environment. I mean, if the pay was reasonable I would try and grind it out but it's not.
Excel looks like a perfect fit for me but its in Lemot which is a bit of a drive for me. -
$17 an hour in Mechanicville. We used to get the whole time we were delayed and they billed it to the rail. Breakdown worked the same.
