Have you considered doing the concrete delivery until one of the concrete bulk delivery jobs opens up? You'll be able to stay local and probably earn more than you would at Prime.

Yes I have. The company I work for hauls a lot of feed for local feed mills too. I've thought about it, even talked to them about it. They would have no problem letting me use their truck to take my driving test. But I really want to get this OTR bug out of my system. I know most want to go local and I may want to very soon after I go OTR. I just don't want to be 5 years down the road wondering.
Who knows what tomorrow will bring in this industry.windsmith Thanks this. -
Local does not pay as good as everyone thinks. I've been doing concrete truck , flatbed, bulk tanker, and dump trailer for 10 plus years now and pay does not go up. I have run the numbers and even on a 1500 mile week at 38 cpm I can make mor then I do now. The only good thing about local is im at home every night. But now kids are grown and leaving home wife is thinkinhh of getting her cdl, shes just scared she wont pass, and we go team drive.
Not really trying to knock the local stuff but this is my experiences with it. I am just wanting to get back out on the road again just dont want to go without her this time.
Hope things work out for you in th future.michaelg, FullMetalJacket and Poacher Thank this. -
Thanks Wolf. I hope things work out for you and your wife as well.
I'm headed to the plant to crawl in the ol cement truck. Hopefully I will know something about my medical by Friday and can get my new orientation date.wolf71 and FullMetalJacket Thank this. -
What a hot day! My AC decided to stop working today. The mechanics couldn't fix it, it needs a new compressor. It won't be here until tomorrow, imagine that. Oh well I needed to lose a few pounds anyway. Nothing like driving a sauna. On top of all that today was a busy busy day. One of our drivers was sent to the hospital with heat exhaustion. A cold front is suppose to move in tonight so tomorrow will be better.
A question about my drug test and my prescriptions. When I went to work for the new company I had to take a drug test. I saw the results everything was negative. So my meds are completely out of my system. I think it would be a good idea to get a copy of this to take back with me when I go to orientation again. Any thoughts? -
Sorry to hear about your troubles man. Hopefully it all gets squared away real soon and you get the chance to go OTR. Keep the positive attitude and things will fall into place.
Good luck.FullMetalJacket and Poacher Thank this. -
Local pay can depend very much on what you do. 1500 miles @ 38 cpm is less than 600 bucks, if you can't make that on a local gig you need a different local gig. My experience with local work is that you need to be able to offer something else besides just driving the truck. Whether you are loading your truck (maybe even by hand) or doing some other physical labor, or some other skill that you bring to the table, you are going to have to have something to offer if you want to make good money. Food service is supposed to pay very well, and it can be heavy work. But 600 a week is just low, that's 15 an hour for 40 hours a week. There are plenty of jobs that pay that low, but for that few hours?
Heat exhaustion in September? That's cute. I just started a new job, on the 8th no less. Loading roofs with shingles. In California. Not by the coast, either. On the 8th, it was well over a hundred degrees, and we were out there throwing 80-90 pound bundles of shingles, tens of thousands of pounds per day. Now that's work. -
Roofing is hard work. I did it for a long time.
Be careful unloading all that in the heat. I'd hate to hear about you having a "cute" heat stroke.Last edited: Sep 15, 2015
austinmike, Chucktshoes and DocMarten Thank this. -
Did you tell your employer when they bent over backwards for you, that they will soon just be bending over when you abandon them for Prime?QuietMike Thanks this.
-
Yes I did. When I talked to them I told them what had happened and in was looking for temp work. When they called me back they says they had a driver quit and thought I would be a good fit. It's coming into the slow time of year for construction. If I stay good, if I move on that's ok too.
My dad drove for this company for many years. They did it as a favor to he and I both.
I hope this puts your worries to rest.
