Not in the winter time, no. You're right about that. It's not like going out west in the winter is something I would do willingly unless I'll be going across 40 or 10. If a load takes me through the mountains then that's where I'm going. Wouldn't exactly be something I would request unless it's spring or summer.

I used to go west all the time and never chained...Beach Bum Thanks this.

But if I did get into a situation where my choice is to either chain up or decide in advance on a place to stop, all I can say is wake me up when the roads get better.
HalpinUout and Knucklehead Thank this. -
Gotta disagree bro. Can't make money if you're sitting. Part of trucking is driving in all conditions unless you don't feel safe, and driving with chains is about as safe as you're gonna get. There's nothing wrong with chaining, I think if you're going to truck and truck in the west, you've gotta chain.

I don't agree with that... Sitting on the side of the road in the "chain up area" is dangerous in itself. Most area's don't have anything separating you and the oncoming traffic that is approaching... You can still make money... How many times per year do you actually chain? In the couple of times a year that you might have to chain by not doing so I really don't see anyone loosing to much money. If someone that runs in an area where they are having to chain on a daily basis that's a little different. Why chain to put your self into something versus just waiting it out... I could see chaining to get out of a bad situation but for me that would be it...
The guy who taught be how to drive had been driving 20 something years and said he has never chained... His motto was Chain time is Nap time... Something I've always stood byBeach Bum Thanks this. -
I chain. I know that some people are completely against it. But if you're chained, you're safe. As safe as you're gonna be on a snow packed mountain. I'm sticking to that. Chaining is part of trucking and waiting out a snowstorm and being late for a delivery is not being a professional.

I guess we all have our own opinions...I'm local now so no chain laws in Illinoisjoseph1135 Thanks this.

If you lived in Florida you'd have it made!!!! But I know it's not for everyone. It's just watching people come out here and be completely unprepared
