I can only speak for one application, dump truck/pony trailer combo at 140,000 pounds gross. I run in an area of sharp corners into 8 to 12% grades.
There's some new Mack Granites here with the MP8 505's and I can say they run away from my 505/1650 DD15 Detroit.
Do I see them in the shop? Yep. Is my Detroit in the shop? Yep. Is my Cummins in the shop? Constantly.
I don't have any Paccar dealers in my area so I can't try a Paccar engine. So basically I can say another Mack or Detroit would be the only two I would touch of these new SCR engines.KB3MMX Thanks this. -

Well i had the unfortunate opportunity to drive at least a dozen macks in my younger years and they call them a dog for a reason its one *** looking at another.

I have a 2014 flat top MP8 with the automatic 12. This thing drives like a Toyota Camry and is almost as quiet. It has the 505, 1550 tuneup on it. I average 82,000 pounds. I have not pulled my pup trailer with it yet. My last truck was a 2005 379, with the C15 tuned at 550, 1850. While at the top of a very long grade I can tell a slight difference, but as for a running start at the bottom of a hill the new Mack MP8 well almost have the exact same terminal speed at the top of the hill.
Where this new MP8 absolutely rules is downshifting and engine braking. I will be honest, I rarely hit every gear when downshifting in my Peterbilt 379. This automatic has a button on the dash for maximum engine braking, I can hit this button at freeway speeds Half a mile from the exit and only need to touch the airbrakes the last 30 feet to the stop sign. That is loaded at 82,000 pounds.
While I love a good 18 speed, this is the future of trucking. For those that whine and want a stick shift and don't think you are a trucker without one, I recommend you remove your air seat, air conditioning, and power steering.
I think a new Peterbilt 389 flat top is the best looking truck out there, but I contend that the new Mack pinnacle drives nicer. The only thing I wish it had is front airbags, like a new loaded 389.20 Mule Team, KB3MMX, Dogals right foot and 1 other person Thank this. -
May I present my new best friend Mack.
jdiesel3406, KB3MMX, Dogals right foot and 2 others Thank this. -
Very nice! Mack rears and suspension too?
