Looking at a 08 pete. Owner says it has 46 rears. Can tell from the silicone that the carrier has been out, carrier tag says d40-170p. The housing looks larger then a regular 40 to me. Is it possible to have a 40 carrier in a 46 housing?
46 rears?

it may be what they call super 40 rears. 40000lb housings with the bigger ring gear for torque. that d40 throws me off im not sure. look on the door jam and see what the axle rating is.
-
Yes it is. There is also an animal called a Super 40, heavier carrier in the lighter housing. Saves some weight. Unless you're hauling seriously heavy stuff the 40k stuff should be plenty.

Yah this looks like a 40 carrier in a 46 housing, super 40 is other way around lol
-
Which is why im confused

Maybe somebody went cheaper when they changed it.

Thats exactly what im wondering. Im not sure a d40 (40,000) carrier would fit in a 46 housing

Hmm well now im really boggled. Housings dont have tags on them or how would one identify that?

sorry I miss read. I don't think it will the axle shafts are still different from a 46 to a super 40. as are the spider gears .super 40's are a good setup I wouldn't be scared of them at all.
