I went to truck driving school in November 2013 til December 2013 and I got a class A CDL. I worked for TMC for less and 2 weeks I went to orientation and decided being on the road wasn't for me. The day after I quit I found a job driving Class A CDL job driving dump trucks and low deck pintle hook trailers. I have been doing this for almost 2 years now my question. If I went back to driving semi trucks do you think I would have a problem? I generally pull around 70,000 to 80,000 lbs between truck trailer and load. I haul bobcats, pavers, rollers, graters, excavators and pallets of concrete sand etc. I always load my own equipment so everyone of those machines I capable of loading. I secure my equipment , never really have to trap except the bed of the dump truck. All my driving is within the state of Ohio at this company but we have worked from Toledo to Findley to Youngstown to Cleveland. We go all over I usually pull a 36 foot trailer but there are a couple 26 foot trailers and a 20 foot trailer I pull occasionally. I haven't had any accidents since I started driving will be 2 years in January. I have gotten two tickets one was for no truck route and the other was an overweight ticket. Both of which my boss paid though because he gave me specific directions to take the route even though it was no trucks (no points either ticket though). Both are over a year old.
Questions about different types of CDL A Experience.

i cannot see much of a problem for you to get a class A job, since all this time you have been driving class B trucks, with that A license. try some smaller OTR or local companies, you got nothing to lose. i'd just stay away from the Swifts, Werners, etc.

Yea usually I pull a trailer though so I have to have the class a with the dump truck a low deck high tensile kaufmann 36 foot gooseneck. And I'll tell ya I can drive a 48 or 53 foot trailer no problem we have a pintle hook 5th wheel dolly to move semi trailers if we need to and I can back them no problem. After having to back up 20 , 26, 36 foot trailers into tiny alleys, and driveways and places that weren't ever met for a truck to get into I got pretty #### good a backing too.

Some places want recent OTR experience and will not count Class B the same as Class A.Should be able to get back into OTR or some local but choices of companies may be limited.

The thing is I do have Class A experience because I dont ever drive the dump truck just as a dump. I am constantly taking equipment from jobsite to jobsite or back to the shop for repairs I hardly ever haul anything in my dump bed hell I did put the bobcat in the bed of the dump truck a few times. That was a fun time.

Dutch Maid might hire you & they're based in Ohio.

You have the exp just not otr so I would stay away from mega carriers.Try small to medium size carriers,by small I mean around 50 trks. That overweight ticket I think does not go on your record.

I think that there is a very specific reason that the better OTR companies want someone with recent OTR experience. I'm sure that they know that someone with your local experience knows how to operate the equipment, that is not the issue. They want to be sure, before they invest in the expense of hiring you and bringing you to orientation, that you know what the OTR lifestyle involves. That do not want to bring you in then you work for two weeks and quit when you decide that you can't handle being out on the road.
