The only 'draws' I had were for lumpers

Is paying for lumpers out of your pocket routine, or are you a L/O - O/O ?

Pay for lumpers is usually paid for by the company at least in large part. Meaning the lumpers get so much as far as your company is concerned. If the lumper demands more then you have to pay the difference.

Yes that is what I was looking for. Trying to get a 3-D look at how the system works, and what I may be looking at during my time on the road. Always good to have the advise and knowledge of those whom have blazed the trail ahead of me.

Hey Nick,

When your trying to get that 3-D look try going to ripoffreport dot com to acquire more info on company's.

Rounding up info will not be easy because anytime some one says something bad someone else comes along and counters.

I don't believe that people spend time writing a bunch of bad stuff for no reason. So it beg's the question who are the people countering? Are they company people hired to counter or what?
If the info is really helpful try and remember the thank you button and or the greenie.

Don't put alot of stock in ripoffreports. They have been successfully sued, so I have been told for falsifyng and fabricating reports. Plus, many who go there to vent are angry and it shows in the low quality of their rantings.

I am an old retired Burglary & Fraud cop from Riverside Ca., so I expected this type of chasing when it came to finding the right company. You guys sure have your hands full in this industry.

I have been reading as many of the posts as I can, and it only gets more intense with every read. Allot of good, and then like you guys said, allot of bad. I will find a good balance in the mess, and hopefully find the right company for my situation.

Will be difficult, as my age is not really in the "Spring Chicken" factory. Most companies like to get 20+ years of service, and I don't know if I have that left in me. But it is something that i have wanted to do for a long time.

That adds up to $.45 a mile that sucks real bad.With all them responsibilities,the chance of getting hurt,sick,health benefits taxes you must be crazy to think thats worth it.I'm sure Prime loves you dude, your making them rich.There making atleast 100 percent profit off just you.Good flatbed loads are getting $2.20 to $4.00 a mile.Get a good broker to lease with you'll double your money.

 

I'm here to "hep ya Nick". I don't think companies look at the 20+ you mention. They just want to keep them trucks moving. Don't even think like that.
About two weeks ago I was out interviewing a couple drivers. I saw a Gordon truck just pull up at a pump and park. A short stocky guy was getting out. He turned around, was caught of guard. I said I just want to ask you if you like driving for Gordan. He got a big smile and say yes. I asked him if age was any problem again he smiled and said, I'm 72 years old.

What you come up with for companies so far?

 

Well so far, Schnider, Maverick, Prime, and Stevens. However, I have a friend that still works Justice out of the Dallas area. I guess the Stevens Comapany is near Dallas, and he says that the company is what us cops used to call a "Make-Up" or "Barbie" company. Looks good, but not that quick upstairs. But then I have found this type of comment about every company I have checked.

Prime is close to me in Springfield. I am in Carthage, retired here in 91 from Riverside, Ca.. If I had to make a quick decision, it would probably be Prime. Close enough for me to drive and check out without listening to the recruiters. Easier to find drivers to talk with.

How about you. Do you have any companies that you were pleased with?

Was wondering how they worked the age thing. I know a couple of guys that were over-seas with me in 69, they loved to drive. both are completely retired now. But they drove when the guys could really make some good money. I should have went into this earlier. They got in it early on. Both retired from the Corps. One stated that if the fuel prices were better, that the guys out there now would be able to feed thier families without state or federal assistance.

I guess for some of the families out there, driving is pretty tough. No time to see the little ones grow up. Seeing them grow up through digital pictures just does not seem fair, but this has been going on for many, many years, and the truck drivers have managed to survive everything that our country's economy and government has thrown at it.

That says allot in my book. For guys to be out there head on with what ever comes there way and still be responsible parents and support the family. Thats what I respect of this proffession.

Well my old butt is babbling. Getting late, and I still have allot of reading to do.

Remember this, my friend, most of the 'older' guys know what work is and aren't afaird to do it, we know what it means to be on time, and usually know that we work for a comapny that has to earn a profit, so we do what we're asked to do [of course within reason!] I think they want 'older' guys because of that. I suggest you look for a company that meets your needs and go for it, start your next new adventure!
