I'll start off with saying I'm new to this site. After 17 years of being a driver on payroll, I've taken the plunge in becoming a Owner/Operator. I landed a contract with a busy freight company and feel very fortunate for being home every night.

I purchased an Ex. Ryder lease 2007 International pre DPF truck with 280,000 miles. I didn't want any of that emissions junk on there, I'm aware of the issues. Turns out I got more than I bargained for. Upon my first week of working it, it started behaving oddly. I dismissed it as the truck may have been sitting for a while and needed to be driven.

The issue is it will randomly, without rhyme or reason shut off momentarily. It did that the first day I drove it. The engine warn light came on and brought it to Ryder to have them look at it. They didn't find anything abnormal with the code reader. After that it drove great for 3 days. Yesterday, it started doing it again on the highway about 4 times in the span of 5 minutes. Instant loss of power like turning the key off for a second and flipping it back on again. Today it happened about 10 times. It occurs at any speed or time, highway or backing up, idling. Smooth or bumpy roads. I will leave it in gear and coast until it fires back up on its own.

When it occurs while idling, it cuts out and back in quick enough that the engine won't stall out, it'll just quit for a split second and fire up again. On the highway, I leave it in gear and it fires back up. Hit resume on the cruise like nothing happened.

What I observed in the moments it was off but coasting at highway speeds:

    - All gauges are functional except the speedo needle drops
    - Voltage doesn't drop while coasting
    - No signs of missing, erratic running at hwy speed or idling
    - Engine Warn lamp lights up and shows faults according to the LCD odometer readout. If truck is shut off and restarted, all faults are cleared and Warn lamp is out until it trips again. Codes are pictured below.

I'm sorry for the long post, I'm giving every detail I know about the issue since Ryder either knows the issue and are refusing to fix it or they're simply unable to fix it. They will not give me clear explanation on the code readout.

I'm my 1st week in with 500 miles on the truck and already facing what feels like a major problem.

Inside the battery box there is a separate smaller wire with a fuse. This is the ECM power. Check this very carefully, make sure there is no corrosion, the connections are tight, and the fuse is in tight. You are losing computer power for some reason, and this is usually the place it's lost.
While you're in there, put a wrench on all the cable nuts and make sure they are good and tight. Loose cables cause issues with starting and can make charging voltages fluctuate.

Great place to start, Thanks. Will it harm anything if I pull the fuse out to examine it to make sure it's seated properly the fuse base prongs are clean?

It shouldn't, those codes say you're already losing computer power anyways.

    Haulin_regional Thanks this.

I had a similar problem and took it to two different dealers after spending hundred of dollars and some scary situations with the truck shutting off on the freeway. The main wire harness was loose on the side of the engine. Cleaned ends and plugged back in. Never had that problem again. Just jiggle the wires on the side of the engine if it shuts off you found the problem. Good luck.

Check the ground also, like 4x4 said ecm power loss, start at battery box clean and check all connections and work your way up the line. I doubt its the fuse itself they usually work or don't, but the holder/plugs may be dirty. Also make sure you check where it actually passes through the box itself, popular place for rubbing and chaffing.

Like others kind of already mentioned, start truck, open battery box and wiggle the hell out of all the wires; maybe do this at the ecm also. I had the same issue, white wire with fuse in battery box had slight corrosion and truck would cut on and off going down the road from hitting bumps. It sucks when your in one lane construction and it cuts off like it did to me. I put in a new fuse holder and smeared dieelectric grease in the holder so moisture wouldnt do it again.

Clean battery clamps, also check wiring to ecm most likely you have damaged wires

Thanks to all the replies on this. It's a very frustrating issue. It seems like it only got worse today. Upon leaving the depot I recorded my mileage and left for my first destination. Upon arrival I noticed the mileage was lower than what it should have been. (it cut out a few times) on the way. Getting back on the highway it cut a few times, actually about 4 times in about one minute. To my disbelief, the ODOMETER WENT BACKWARDS!!!!!!! I'm not kidding here, the meter, and the trip meter, would roll backwards every time it would cut out. Sometimes 1,2, as much as 18 miles in one shot! Now I know where my mileage went.

Needless to say I grounded the truck and brought it back to Ryder and ordered them to take it to Cummins. I returned at the depot with 20 miles more than what I left with. Should have been closer to 200 miles. This truck cost me almost $140 in paid mileage that I can't recover because of a bad meter reading. Once again I'm not driving it since it cost me my mileage pay. Lost some yesterday too but only added it all up today on what was going on.

I wanted to actually catch it on recording but since it's so random, I can't hold a camera and drive if I don't know when it'll happen.

My $ is on a bad ground/grounds/and or connections, long term could have done permanent damage to the electronics, but if the shop is thorough there will be a ground issue as a root cause. Just my $0.02.
