I know that there are a number of opinions, but I want the opinions explained..

Let's take gear x and gear y when climbing:
To maintain speed with gear x, the engine overrevs; while gear y bogs it down...

    Which is better and why?

If your not allowed to let her roll on down the down hill to get that little extra speed then you may have to let off speed till you find a speed 1 gear down that your motor will climb without blowing up all the way to the top?

I have never seen it broke down like this.
Try not to over think it, It may seem overwhelming but its really very basic.
Gear x wont overrev if you back out of the throttle

There are a few grades (different for each truck and weight) that you will find that will put you in such a scenario for an extended period of time. Not much you can do except choose the lower gear and allow the truck to slow a bit more and if it wants to continue to "speed up" and the grade has not yet lowered, just back out of the throttle slightly, find a good music station, and relax and smoke 'em if you got 'em.

Also, don't ever engage the cruise on long up-hill struggles, no matter.

This was a constant problem on some of the routes I ran with my previous company and their POS crapcadias.

As the others have said, pull the lower gear and back out enough to keep it from over-revving and just hold it there until you know you can grab the next year.

Frustrating sometimes but better for the engine.

Back off x...the engine will let you know what works...chill out and let it pull.
