3406 B failed emissions in NY

a few years a go a friend needed a truck to haul his backhoes and was thinking of a 1 ton diesel, but was skeptical, I convinced him on a T 300, since he didn't know anything about heavier trucks I did all the specs from factory, he got the ISC 8.3 with 315 hp that thing came and remained ungoverned straight from the factory, this was the last year before all the epa crap was started on trucks engines, I think it was 2002.

 

Use to pull a lot of steel between Ashland, KY and Middletown, Oh.
Down on 52 going into Portsmouth they had no Jake Brake signs, that was in the 80's. I honored their signs, the 1976 Peterbilt Patriot (Cabover) I drove would bust your eardrums. But of course their was idiots using jakes anyways. Oh, and I know what a 92 is.... Own 2 of them, 432 cubic inch GMC V-6, and a few oddballs.

 

Don't those tractors that do sled pulling run wide open ? Cat, Cummins, etc..... I have heard them turn over 3000 rpms easy, and yes I have seen some go kaboom but there running more than just diesel fuel. Also, not trying to start something, but why not just have the truck governed around 2100 or so ? I mean, does anyone really open it up that much, in the old days the jimmys would run wide open but they where 2 strokers.

Those sled pulls are not stock equipment. You wind up stock equipment that high and its exploding. as for just putting a governor on, on today's electronic engines that will be fine assuming you aren't flooring it under a load. But on mechanical engines, suddenly dumping that much fuel into the cylinders and bad things are gonna happen.

 

I believe there are a few members I seen that run there truck pulling sleds(mechanically engines) and use it for work to haul also but there out in the farms. Just saying.......

 

Rank, you can easily govern the fuel rod travel just by putting a stop nut on it. with trial and error you can figure out where you want it at for what what rpm you want it at

 

He didn't say that folks didn't use their pulling trucks to do real work...only that most of those pulling trucks aren't stock. The engines have been modified...cams, valve springs, cranks, bearings, heads, etc...all to allow the engine to turn the speeds they do pulling the sled.
