I worked at GTI on the reefer board (I had to get the hell out of there before I killed someone) but honestly it wasn't bad. You're always busy and if there's no loads, you can hook to a dry van and roll. You just had to stay on top of them with certain things.

    Sigh.

My mother is a nurse practitioner, BSN, and dietician. She retired from the VA some years ago but has been invaluable in helping me keep my intake properly balanced. The clinical dietician, whom I visit annually as part of my management plan, says she wishes all of her clients were as conscious of their diets as I am. Just because I do an occasional visit to a Chinese place doesn't mean I make a lifestyle of it. If I go to a Mexican place there are balanced choices to eat--did you know a real Mexican wouldn't know what to do with what you call a taco? (I'm Latino, dude--grew up on real Latino cuisine, home cooked by my own mother, and it looks nothing like Taco Bell). Did you know if you cut carbs completely for too long, your liver will dump glucose into your system and your sugar will spike? Most people are eating carbs they don't even know about. (Complex versus simple carbs) Also there is a relationship between the fiber content and the carb content in any given meal.(Long chain vs short chain) Plus, complete versus incomplete proteins will affect the total glycemic index of your meal. Some fat is also necessary for your meat machine to function properly.

Everybody's body is different, and diabetes affects different people differently. Moreover, the condition is progressive. And genetic in many cases. I'm the first man in my father's bloodline to ever live past 45 with the condition. When I was first diagnosed I was blindsided, as I was in pretty good condition. Ended up spending a weekend in an ER with sugar levels over 600. It took a few months to get everything under control but I was extremely tightly controlled with A1C levels below 5.0 for years. This was with occasional treats and, yes, CARBS, because carbs are not the devil. Shutting carbs out of your diet for too long puts you at risk of entering a ketotic state, which can be fatal to a diabetic (bad for anyone, really).

When I saw my doctor about my rising sugar levels, I had already eliminated treats and stopped working out (I'm not crazy). After some investigation he informed me my pancreatic function had lessened and I would need some additional meds to compensate (got a daily dose of Glyxambi). It took a little while but he's cleared me to exercise regularly again--I had stopped because elevated heart rate and blood pressure when your sugar is up can cause serious microvascular damage that can lead to complications including necrotic flesh in the extremities.

Now I do Quigong for cardio and hard Kung ## for strength, while balance and flexibility training kind of come together in both workouts. (I am a classically trained, high ranking martial artist with over 40 years experience)

I don't NEED a walking stick. I WANT a cane with a hook handle. I train with one regularly, ever since I got mugged (unsuccessfully) in Newark NJ a few years back. I do have a trick knee so it helps occasionally but isn't necessary. Point is it's easier to carry a cane than an ox tail knife. I'm a little paranoid with my wife with me and want a little extra advantage since my daughter lost my last one.

Incidentally, my wife is EXTREMELY happy with my abilities to defend her and see to all of her needs/desires. No chemical assistance is necessary.

This may have sounded like a rant, but I'm not upset with anyone. Just don't make assumptions--I don't tell you guys EVERYTHING.

(Prances away into the sunset, playing a merrie tune on his flute in an absolutely not gay whatsoever manner)

Don't worry about putting us in our place if we become too personal or offensive, after all we're all mature adults here. Except me I'm a :munky2:+:computer: and Phredd, he's just Phredd. I really don't think you need anything for self defense, just make THAT THAT THAT face you made:biggrin_2551: that will scare off anybody who maybe less crazy than some of us.

Sitting on the toilet in a rest area in Colorado, read that, started cackling like a madman. Guys in stalls on either side suddenly finished their "business" and vacated the premises.
