I'd capture video evidence. Then confront them and simply tell them if I catch you again I'm destroying your phone. Get back to terminal ASAP and get another trainer.

Screw evidence, go to your immediate supervisor in the company and tell them what's going on. If they need proof, they can ask to see the phone and look for themselves against the logs - and just because they can delete the texts doesn't mean it isn't traceable. See what you are missing beside not being a responsible driver is the fact that if this idiot gets into an accident and kills someone, you are liable too because you posted this on an open forum and took no action to prevent it.

Remember screw him if he is dangerous on the road, it is the lives of others and your life that is more important than his job.

My trainer played with his phone constantly while i was in the sleeper and then started doing it when i was up too. Hit the rumble strip then would slowly look up. I told him to stop it that it was dangerous. He got mad and said he could do both safely. I told him to quit that crap. He said he would.Next night, rumble, rumble. I upgraded a week later. He is a pos.

There are three types of people in the world
    1. Those who never text and drive
    2. Those who text and drive on rare occasions (a simple "ok" perhaps)
    3. Those who text continually, all day, every day, regardless what they are doing
The idea that apparently there are many trainers and team mates who are a #3 is sad (for the other team member) and disturbing, and angering for anyone else who must operate in the vicinity of these individuals (or worse yet, intrust their lives to that level of distraction as they occupy the same vehicle 24/7).

And then some here wonder why carriers would implement driver-facing cameras.

I'm sorry but this is absolutely intolerable especially from a trainer. I'll tell you now, confronting him about it may not end well. If the company gave you a point of contact for the duration of training you need to contact that person and get another trainer ASAP. Otherwise you need to contact safety and just let them know you need another trainer, that you aren't comfortable with this guy. A confrontation could make the duration of training with him a PITA.

If he gives any lip when you approach him about this make sure you call 911 after he trips in the parking lot and hits his head on the fuel tank.

I'd just video him from the crack in the sleeper curtain. Maybe a just few minutes with the phone constantly being thumbed. Email this vid to the safety manager at the carrier. You'll have another trainer within a few days and perhaps it can be done without the trainer even knowing what's going on before he hits the next major terminal
