I just moved over to Market Transport.

I worked for Market when my mom got sick. I needed to stay on the I-5 and May just couldn't provide enough miles on the 5 corridor.

It was okay until Thanksgiving week when I made it clear to dm #2 I was taking time off and would be back on the following Monday. DM #1 called me and said I would have to deliver load day after Thanksgiving at 0500. I said, no I'm not, he said, yes you are. I said no I'm not and to prove it to you I will drop the keys to your truck off and empty it out. He said okay.

Needless to say, Market would probably not rehire me if my life depended on it

 

I just talked to a May recruiter (which I realize doesn't guarantee "truth" or "reality") - she said it's $10.50/hr for your time in orientation, then out with trainer for 2-6 weeks at $72 per day, and after that, it's 35 CPM or the flat pay option of $105 per day. Not sure how long that option lasts. She also said that if you choose to go with another starter carrier for 4 months at least, then you can reapply with May as an experienced driver and get a $500 sign on bonus.

I was thinking there was a terminal 90 minutes from me for home time, plus they have a pet policy, but the yard's just a drop yard. So that might not work for getting home. Now thinking that's not going to work if I can never get home unless I quit.

 

Who was the recruiter? Where do you live? The .35/mile is probably wrong and believe me, they will run you hard to get every penny of the flat rate.

I *did* get home every two weeks, but it limited my options for runs.
(The guys running 48 had a better life, but they saw home less)

May holds all the cards. They're really good at not paying drivers; sign on with them to get your training, quit at nine months to a year. They're a primarily a meat grinder run by lieing liars who lie.

 

I didn't even get her name. I wasn't prepared to take the call so I got whatever I could on a post it. I live in Modesto but want to move potentially to N cal or Oregon somewhere, so that's what made it appealing, but not if I can't stop off an hour from home for downtime. I'd be spending all my downtime getting home and then have to turn around.

Good to know. So I might as well try Watkins Shepard again out of Modesto, then...

 

Where'd my reply go? I don't know who I spoke to. I live in Modesto. Mostly I want to get a pet policy in place so I don't have to abandon my dog. If they're lying about 35 cents then might as well try Watkins Shepard and at least have a home base.

I think they are not lying about the pay. Most carriers have increased the pay to attract drivers. $.35/mile to start is $.03 more than I got when I hired on over 6 years ago. They dropped starting pay to $.30/mile when I was training there.

I never had any pay issues when I was there. And, they most certainly use drop yards for guys' home time.

 

If you live in Modesto, you would park at Lathrop. That yard is awful. Really awful.

It's also where I currently park. And I have to wash my car once a week as I am too ashamed to have anyone see it with all the dirt that it collects in just one week. (I am not vain; it really is a dusty hellhole!)

Beware the flat rate vs. cents-per-mile equation: if you're on a flat rate, you'll be running hard. 2500-2800 per week. On cents per mile, you'll be doing lots of Costco retail deliveries, less miles.
