Had a call today to run a line haul for 44 cents a mile. He says at 60 mph thats $22/hr. My reply was do your trucks do 60 uphill loaded. Silence.

Right. As a new driver, you just need to get in where you can at first. Then you will begin running into drivers at shippers and receivers all over town. If they wear a uniform and/or drive a daycab, you talk to them and ask how they are treated, how much they earn, and if they are ever laid off. You will begin to see a pattern as to who is happiest and who tends to have a lot to ##### about. In the meantime, unless you came from a decent career (who does that?) you will most likely be making more than you did before anyway.
And regarding downtime: when I had a job with a lot of uncompensated downtime, I read a lot, and listened to a lot of podcasts. Get a good book. It's not such a bad thing when you are first starting out. -
I would ask. I bet they have something in place, most companies do.

Good point. I got an A++ degree in computer science in 4 months sitting around rail yards and port terminals.
