Did your fan come on?Does'nt sound like it did.But if temp climbed that quick and that high lower stats want help.Seems like you have another issue.Stats stuck open or sensor bad,fan not coming on or something else.250,wow,better find that problem or you'll have bad problems.

Will putting in new thermostats raise my engines temperature average in the summer?

First year in me having a 3406e. It likes to run cool and I have an engine cover for it but don't want to run into issues of it running too cold in the winter but at the same time want it to stay runnning cool like it has been in the summer.

I know this is an old thread but there is alot of good info here and it seems like the right spot to ask

If it likes to run cool it most likely needs the thermostats changed anyway. Only reason it would run cool in the winter is if your thermostats are not working properly or maybe in severe cold weather. There is a reason operating temperature is supposed to be in the 180's.

you need some heat for a diesel to run efficiently something else is wrong for that to happen. stuck t stat or blockage or pump propeller is slipping on shaft, excreta.

I've driven so many trucks that had inaccurate dash gauges. I run a scan gauge now and I know

Remember guys, thermostats by design control MINIMUM operating temp....the entire cooling package as a whole controls maximum temperature. That's not to say failed thermostats can't cause an overheat situation but one needs to check for proper airflow through the radiator, water pump operation, etc.

That's why I'm asking if my average temperature in the summer because I kinda like that it runs between 125-150 in the summer and will just put the cover on in the winter Vs buying new stats and raising the temperature in the summer.

    How flawed is this thinking?

125°-150° is way too cool for proper operation. I would verify your dash gauge using CAT ET and if that is correct than you definitely have an over-cooling issue that needs to be addressed.

    sloshed and lester Thank this.
