Just as an update, I graduate next week and I have an employment offer from both Northern and System. With System I would be running flatbeads mainly from Stockton down to LA and some runs to Arizona and Nevada. I would start at $.34/mile with extra money for tarping/strapping/stops etc.and be home most weekends. Northern would be Western regional Reefer runs and LTL. I'm still struggling with deciding between the two and I need to make a decision soon. Please keep the help and comments coming because they really do help

Yeah. You would have to be stupid to pass up Northern Refrigerated
They are extremely picky on who they hire. Congratulations on the offer and go pull that reefer. Did you ever take your road test?

@BTW Trucker - If your still out there, curious to where you ended up?? Recent grad, also looking at these 2 companies.
moloko Thanks this. -
Basically, the most money one could possibly make if they are cruising at 55 MPH with no traffic, is about $20/hr straight time. That's if you are driving nonstop. Consider that you make the least amount of money when you are doing the most work--unloading freight, breaking down pallets, etc. That truck's not moving; you're getting $12/hr to do manual labor. However they do have a lumper policy, I don't know the specifics about it.
I know a few former drivers from Northern, they said they would frequently take home only like $600 a week... and it's not just a driving job, it's physically demanding. But the benefits are very competitive, so much so that they are practically giving them away. -
@moloko - thanks for the info. Haven't really seen a whole lot of info on forums regarding NRT, and haven't seen any major negatives on them. Do you drive for them?? I know they are a smaller company running about 200 trucks, I've seen there trucks here and there. Are they still running the long nose pete's that I saw or have they updated there trucks??
