I could make two threads really, because they are different animals.
I currently work for a small, local company doing day-work. I average 10 hours a day and make about 60k per year, home every night and 2 days a week off.
As a single guy with no rent, no bills to speak of, I made substantially more doing OTR because I had no rent, utilities, etc.
I went local because it was it gave me a chance to get a good wage with normal-ish hours. (I work a lot of nights).
I did this because I wanted the time to be around friends, family, etc.
I LOVED OTR. I really did. But I also realized that this lifestyle would preclude making any new significant relationships and would wreck my ability to be there for important family/friend events.
It's a trade-off.
I made awesome money OTR, living in the truck with no bills. But there's a price to be paid
Curious as to what you all want.
I love to drive. It gets boring as Hell on the same runs over and over, but the driving itself, is always interesting. On the other hand, working in a cube doing the same old crap over and over again gets boring too.
What is it that you desire out of your trucking career?
O/O? Starting your own small fleet? Just a job? Waht do you want out of all the acrifices that we all have to make?
What do you want from a company?

I started as a old school trucker in a new school way. I was in a truck at 18 as a helper with my cousin delivering cabinets. Home delivery and to different stores up and down the east coast of florida. I never thought about a truck before then. I liked it and ask him to teach me how to drive. He did. Fshaker columbia 10 speed pulling a pup. ( i hated backing up but thankful i learned on it.) i got my permit and i was doing his runs with him down my neck. 10 yrs later i will be getting into a lease purchase with no overhead besides her and my wife. I am teaching her the ropes on accounting for taxes. I hope to eventually have a small fleet and maybe if its meant for me to become a mega. If werner schneider and others have done it. I think i will deal with the headache to leave my kids and grands something to keep them working for themselves.

I hope all of that pans out in your favor. I'm a recent grad from a driving school. I have about 2 years fracing in the oilfield and want to get out OTR.
What I would want from a company would be the opportunity to make a good life for my wife and soon to be born child and just like Steve said eventually make something to keep my children working for them selves. If it takes more time from home to accomplish that and give them more then I had growing up it will all be worth it.stevez57305 Thanks this. -
