To trucking. Getting my CDL in less than 1 month. I want to stay close to home, OTR is not for me. And I am having a hard time finding ANYONE that stays close to home and is asking less than 1 year exp.
So I want to work for Schneider and have 0 exp..

Well, I
Well, I really would recommend the 1 year OTR as it would open up many doors for you down the road (keep in mind I did 18 mnths OTR with a 3 year old at home)...also, you can't beat OTR for behind the wheel experience but, if your set against it, then yes, I would recommend starting with a Mega (like SNI), at least they will train you in good equipment....after 4 or 5 years of saving, buy your own truck (if that's your thing)...at least doing Intermodal, you will get 10 times more backing experience than doing OTR!!!!El Ivan Chicago Thanks this. -
A lot of bigger companies won't hire you later on, without OTR experience just letting you know so, you don't get a nasty surprise in the future...
El Ivan Chicago Thanks this. -
That is actually my plan. 5 years from now I would like to own my own truck. Thanks for the help! I understand I will close some doors without the OTR, but I'm willing to close them. Home is important to me, even if it is less money.

In all honesty, it's not about the money (you will make about the same starting out) it's about the experience and confidence in handling yourself around the equipment and dealing with traffic....still there's always more than one way to skin a cat!!!!
Save your pennies and buy a good used truck in 5 years, you'll be glad you did !!!!
I am!!!!
Buena Suerte!!!!....Good luck!!!!El Ivan Chicago Thanks this. -
BTW..my cousin's name is Ivan and he does Intermodal with his own truck as well!!!
El Ivan Chicago Thanks this. -
Exactly! I like the idea of going around 350 miles around me. Long trips but not that long. And doing much research, I keep seeing that they offer great training. That is worth it to me. Thanks for all the help man!

If you get a roommate, in a hotel, dorm, wherever, keep your wallet on you 24 / 7. Save a visit with local County deputy.

They stuck me with a thief. -
if I did it in two years anyone can do it!, pay your dues working OTR but keep your eyes open for anything local even if is something you don't like such as dump truck or trash hauler then work your way to intermodal, keep your eyes on the price.
I have a friend of mines he go his CDL about the same time I got mines the SOB just started driving out of the port and just because he had the cdl for 4 years now he is considered a experience driver when the poor guy cant back a trailer for his life!El Ivan Chicago Thanks this.
