I haven't started Cdl school yet. Can someone explain what is happening in the photo. Is it a situation where you have run out of your 11 or 14 and they are saying you can drive on your 10?

Is there even such a thing as off duty drive?

There is an exemption for personal conveyance. .. OFF DUTY DRIVING.. that is allowed to permit a driver to BOBTAIL to the supermarket, doctor , entertainment, etc , when they are relieved of duty.

Some companies do not allow this , some do. The amount of time allowed also varies by company.

The one hard rule is it can not be a "laden" vehicle.

Some interpret that to mean an empty trailer is OK to pull on ODD..... it is NOT.

You must be bobtailing. On electronic logs there is a separate duty status to designate this function. I'm not sure how one does this on paper logs. I ran paper for 23 years and never was an issue for me. With the AOBR , truck movement must be accounted for due to satellite tracking.

Personal Conveyance (PC) is determined by company and State, FMCSA only has a "guidance" statement regarding the issue.
Some states require bobtail, some allow an MT trailer....WA considers an MT trailer to be "part of a load" so in WA one must be bobtail (no trailer)...CA and OR allow for "unladen" to qualify (MT trailer).

Keep in mind that PC can not be used to "advance toward a load". i.e., get unloaded and use PC to get to a place to park for your 10 hour break. Get your dispatch for your next load and now you go to regular logging. You don't have to "go back on the clock" from the location you went to PC.

    It's what our safety "says".

Also , just yesterday on Landline Now they did a small piece on this subject and it was what was said then as well.

    I don't care , personally.

Its never been an issue with me until the last year or so when we went Elogs.

I've used it just a handful of times to bobtail to the hotel from one of our terminals.

Just trying to help the OP. Everyone reads it how they wish.

Where I live there is a Walmart next to a couple truck stops and you see drivers bobtailing to the Walmart all the time.

I guess they leave their unhooked trailer parked at the truck stop.

Isn't that why you buy a king pin lock? I know Schneider makes you get one.

Just out of curiosity, how much cushion would you leave when trip planning?. A traffic back up could be 30 mins or 3 hours. I don't drive now, but even when I did, it was all local and I never had to follow HOS rules.

I absolutely hate being late even when it is nothing to do with work or set appointments (I am the guy always sat in the movie theatre 30 mins before the show starts), but at the same time you can't be "giving" hours away if you are trying to make a living while regulated by a Federal clock.
