I applied for a company as an over the road owner-operator (I own my own truck+trailer). They provided me some information what there current drivers are averaging. Currently, one driver is hauling 53' dry vans only, OH, PA mostly, average 1600-1800 miles per week, and paying 2.20-2.40/mile average. Roughly this averages to 3900-4100 gross per week. Average weight on the loads is about 25-30klb.

Another driver, who is also hauling 53' dry vans only, is running down south (OK, TX, KS areas) and back east (PA, NY), averaging about 3,500 miles, and paying about 1.80-1.90/mile average. Roughly this averages to 6000-7,000 gross per week. Average weight on the loads is about 30-35klb.

So thats the numbers I was provided, and they take 10% off the weekly gross average, which is basically 10% of the load. So 90% goes to the truck.

Whats everyones thought on this? The numbers seem good to me and I want to join, but don't wanna be fooled if thats not the case.

IMO if you can average $2.20 for all miles that's great. If that's the case, I'll pay you to tell me who the company is and I'll go out and buy a trailer and pull for them..

I would ask for contacts to verify the information that was provided to you.

I can tell you anyone doing that with a van, especially in current market conditions, did not just sign on with a company and said company just gave them freight with rates like that. Those drivers are go-getters who know wtf they are doing if they are doing that. You don't just sign up at a company and do averages like that with a dry van by showing up. You're going to have to put effort into it. If you go there with expectations it's going to happen just because you'll be disappointed. Vans are cheap. A dime a dozen. Almost all of them run that way. Especially the ones that don't put a lot of work into it. Driving and showing up are not any part of the work in that equation. Those are a given, everyone shows up and knows how to drive. Nothing special about that.

Not saying they arent but it does sound kind of to good to be true right now. I'm wondering if that $2..20/mile isn't on just loaded miles with a good bit of deadhead thrown in. Those rates are still possible right now on short runs that were paying $4-$5/mile a year ago.

So I got more information from the owner today after speaking with him for a little more and asking some questions. Basically, there drivers are experienced and are smart and are able to get good rates. They essentially do a self-dispatch approach and let the driver pick what to drive (give the drivers access to load board and let him book his freight, they offer $25 credit back to the driver for each load he books himself). Based on the recent settlement sheets I was shown for the month of September today, those numbers seem to match-up. I uploaded a sample of what I was sent and hopefully more experienced drivers could vet this. But it seems like a good gig and I might jump on it cause freight is slow right now and if there doing well during the slow time they must be doing good during fast time.

Yeah that's what I was thinking and probably not counting 10% off the top. Info on 2 drivers looks OK but is still vague and really has zero bearing on anything OP will accomplish. Companies generally don't have a clue what sort of real world routes drivers take, not always the shortest, and even less of a clue what their deadhead actually is. If those drivers are keeping close tabs on their operation's numbers, and could show documentation to back up the settlements, then those kinds averages at their 90% take would be above average for sure. Don't run across many o/o out here who can tell you to a mile or penny what they have actually done YTD though.
