I could make just as much as I do now running for UPS Linehaul and get the nice bennies. My wife has great health insurance so that helps, but the fact I work 7 months a year and only when I want to is what keeps me owning a truck. If I worked as much as the UPS and Walmart drivers do, I'd be making much more. If you want to see sad, mosey over to the UPS Freight thread and see the guy trying to justify running 3000 miles a week at $1.28 a mile. There are plenty of guys and gals out there that just cannot do basic math.

I was offered a job with a mom and pop company that was excited to be doing a job for $1.90 per mile. They told me how the shipper was going to use them for all his freight. I pasted on the job.

The next week the employees of that company had all their paychecks bounce.

I use the other side of my brain. Never was much good at spelling. I thank you for pointing out my errors. It was actually an English teacher who gave me my only less then perfect grade.

You have the freedom to decide what type of freight you want to haul, what you want to drive, how hard you want to work, etc...

To some guys, that's worth it.

You've never pulled a flatbed or any other type of open deck have you? In open deck, you have days you're so dirty the homeless guys are cleaner.
And for my broken and missing teeth. It's called a chain binder.

I had to laugh out loud at this post. Chain binders indeed!

In regard to the topic of this thread, I'm driving a truck for an owner operator running flatbed to the oil rigs. Right now we are on pace to gross about $290,000 to the truck. We are on pace to run about $70,000 in fuel and about 90000 miles. This is during a slow year.

After paying me $70,000 he will end up with a net profit of around $50,000.

Well then, you need to be more careful when you're spinning it while holding the ends. :)

Snap binders might hurt like hell every once in a while, but I hate those ratchet binders. I don't know why, I just never liked them. Too slow. Always gunked up threads.
Kinda like what every thread here I post in turns into.

You forgot about repairs and insurance etc so he doesn't get 50k profit.
