so here's the thought. if you ask, do most companies allow you to take 3-5 days off without pay? not on a regular basis, maybe once a year. say you decide to go camping or a family trip etc and do not have vacation.

I take a week off once every two months - normally I go to South America or Europe.
It depends who you work for and how lenient they are. -
I stay out 3-5 weeks then take off 4-7 days. All depends on your company....
Longarm Thanks this. -
you may have to turn your truck in at the terminal. some companies want to keep the trucks rolling.dca, TheJrodTest and lots of character Thank this.

They should let you if you give them notice... That seems like a really bad reason to let a good driver go. We give our guys all the time (within reason) that they need. Just because you are a truck driver doesn't mean you have to be an absentee family member.

Most companies allow you to accrue time off at a set rate. Usually, 1 day off for every 7 out. Stay out 5 weeks, take 5 days off. If you live close to the terminal expect to turn you truck in for maintenance. If not you have to have a secure place to park.
This is very common.Longarm Thanks this. -
Awfully short amount of time for a long tripmrdot Thanks this.

If I take longer the company starts to ##### and moan

This mostly applies to the mega companies. Op find a good small company to work for not the mega garbage. I'm gone for 7 days then off a minimum of 3 days.
