I'm a reporter at the daily newspaper in Chattanooga, Tenn., and I'm considering writing a story soon about how truckers feel about crossing Monteagle Mountain.
Interstate 24 crosses the mountain, and features one of the steepest grades for any interstate in the country.
I've heard that at one time, Monteagle was a nightmare for tractor-trailer operators, and that it had its own legacy and even mythology.
Now, however, the road has been widened and vastly improved, with several additions of signage.
So I'm curious what the feeling is today.
Thanks for any help, including real-life experiences on the mountain.

First of all. It's not a mountain. It's a plateau. It's not bad if you jog down it. I'd take it over Eisenhower or Cabbage in the snow any day.

For the many of the "eastern US drivers", it's a significant grade to be dealt with. In reality it's as "steep" as many western US passes, but it's not as long, so you go from top to base in a shorter distance.
A heavy truck, being driven by an inexperienced driver or driver who likes to push their luck can easily get into trouble that can manifest itself in several different ways.OLDSKOOLERnWV, bullhaulerswife and Chattanooga Reporter Thank this. -
It's a hill.... that's all

Now, without the interstate system and modern drivetrain technology it could be a real beast. Especially in inclement weather conditions.

Not bad. Stop station at the top but I'm sure before that was there it could sneak up on you if one was not familiar with the mtn. Only worry going down it now is the police if I'm light and get a little ahead of myself

Lots of good info here. As a rule I desend at whatever speed that requires little or no brake use. This rule as kept me out of trouble for my years. If the road is slick go even slower. Number one thing is don't let someone pressure you into going faster than you're comfortable with.passingthru69, Longarm and Cottonmouth85 Thank this. -
Very good rule of thumb.
And if one doesn't have an engine brake, you just have to make the descent at 25-30 mph. That's life on the road.gonejpn, Wild Murphy and mountaingote Thank this.
