Internet on the road

My AC is broken, so I won't be doing any "chillen" till I get home tomorrow night. Hopefully, guys in the shop will fix it right this time.

Sometimes wi-fi isn't free, you can buy access based on duration of time that you want to use. Some truckstops have free access, sometimes you can pick it up from another network. Some states also have free wi-fi in the rest areas also.


I thought this thread was about how truckers get internet in their cabs, not having tech argruments.

 

There are aircards that work form tower to tower like cell phones... I have some freinds looking into a free wifi network..I have heard of skyscape..I dont know much about it...they have a way for live feed form your webcam...That may work for your needs...I have a camcorder on a trypod and take video and send it in email to them... Its helps the family to see where i go and i have control of what they see and here there are some words they don't need the here that come across the cb..Its not that same as live feed...

 

I've had my Millenicom car for awhile now, I love it. I also got a Wilson antenna to go with it. I get service just about everywhere.

The signup was painless and the install/activation was super easy. The aircard has a built-in flash drive that contains the required software(Windows/OS X/Linux)

 

So it seems Verizon is the most popular plan for Internet on the road and the $60 a month comes up alot too so that is an unlimited talk plan, correct? Do you guys/gals get service in most anywhere you drive including public rest stops where you crash overnight? I currently use AT&T Go plan which is pay as you go but when I hit the road I'm gonna need an unlimited plan. Also how many truck stops/gas stations can you find free wifi and are they good enough for email/browsing? If these are common enough is a Verizon internet card neccessary for just email/browsing/webcam?

i don't pay a penny for wifi service. i just park near hotels or places that offer free wifi and access the net. i am parked next to a days inn now using thiers. and it's running 54 mbps right now.

 

Good for you! I bought one of their USB modems on a Friday evening and couldn't get it working all weekend because they have no customer support on weekends! At least not at the phone number listed in the literature that came in the package with the modem. It was Monday before I could get anyone on the phone to help me, and it worked once - and never again. I canceled my contract and got my money back. I figured I'd just be stuck with truckstop wifi - which, if you use it as much as I would, would be about $60 a month anyway. So...

I decided to try the Verizon card. It worked instantly out of the box, has 24/7 customer support and mind-bending speed. I'm really glad I decided to try again. Verizon has been awesome so far.

 

Huh?! I worked data support for AT&T. They're definitely open on Saturdays. Were you using the number for the aircard or your cell phone? The aircard number should have routed you directly to data support.

 

Some interstate rest areas are adding free wifi, but here in the Southeast it is very rare. Some people buy these semi-expensive superduper antennas that can snag a wifi connection from as far away as a quarter mile. It's far too hit-and-miss for me though, and you need a wifi card that can accept an external antenna.
