There are no mountains east of Colorado. It's just an illusion due to some of the low spots being lower than some of the other low spots....I remember when I used to go off Monteagle in high gear just to scare the flatlanders. The only problem in that area is the fog and weenie drivers that can't go up or down hills without having problems
Straight Stacks Thanks this. -
lots of guy let all the four wheelers stacking up behind them pressure them. I could careless. We'll all get to the bottom eventually. I'd rather do it in one piece. Running Wolf creek every night for 3 months taught me a lot about mtn driving.

Wolf Creek isn't bad. It's way easier than Coal Bank, Molas, and Red Mountain all in a row.

I live in Chatt, born and raised. I've been over Monteagle literally hundreds of times in a big truck. If you stay on I-24 it's no big deal. But descending on US-41 (i.e. The old road) on the northbound side is something else entirely. Lots of switchbacks on a very steep grade. Westbound US-41A into Manchester is pretty steep too.
Wild Murphy and Cottonmouth85 Thank this. -
I've been over Red mtn a few times. I just plain hate that road lol. I have pics somewhere of my buddy chaining up his gas tanker with about 6in of snow on the road. It's take a extra big set to haul gas on the road in the winter.

One of my favorite and one of the most ignorant statements that continually get posted on here...ANY grade a driver doesn't respect will get them in trouble--and that knows NO geographic location--and almost typically posted by someone who has never been off the big road on the east coast---spend a few days on the old US highways in Pa/Wv....not to mention the 12+% grades right into downtown--with driveways and parked cars all along the way....and yes in the 43 years Ive been out here there isnt a large rock/pass/mountain grade I havent run across--and Ive seen trucks tagged from all over get in trouble on grades in every part of the country....But like anything else w/a little attention to detail and patience...there are NO bad hills91B20H8, bigguns, RedForeman and 6 others Thank this.

Evidently you were born without a sense of humor. There isn't anybody in the world that respects mountains more than I do. I learned how to drive in em, been living in em for over 40 years.

I have a suggestion for your story. Get permission to do a ride along with an experienced driver. Have them show you what it feels like going up and down. Also, have him do it at the correct speed limit and watch every truck pass you by.

no let a rookie new driver take him down ,not thats be funny
bigguns and Wild Murphy Thank this.
