Just tell him to follow a Schneider around everywhere. I hear those guys get 9mpg all day long!
-
I believe, and somebody will tell me I'm wrong, but the electronic engine controls will make it hard to hurt your motor at 900. Personally I wouldn't go that low, and the torque curve falls off again by then. Transmission is irrelevant.

-
Yeah. I was thinking to shift for a low end of 1000 RPM, unless the need for torque is minimal.
-
It's sure not good for it, hard on the transmission for sure.Hegemeister and Straight Stacks Thank this.

I don't particularly care for the ishifts...I'm only experienced in the mAnualdroid shifters myself.
So, I would agree that the lower the RPMs you can upshift at, the better. But there comes a point where you risk bogging the motor down and actually using more fuel/damaging the motor, especially since it's still breaking in. Only the driver can determine this point.
Also, you can use the brakes more when stopping (as opposed to downshifting, which causes you to rev the RPMs), along with minimal use of the jake brake. However, you stated that he runs heavy, so this may not be the best choice either.
Bottom line? Best way to lower the mpg dramatically? Turn the ignition key to the left!

If it's an XE package, it will shift at 1300-1500 rpm depending on load. If you need to keep it in the power curve, press the E/P button. That will change the shift point to 1600-1800. When empty ypu can drag race cars, lol.
My truck is a 2015 with the XE package (I shift with .78 OD and 2.64 rear end). It cruises at 1200 rpm @ 67 mph. I am averaging 7.6 mpg and that's with grossing 79k going to Knoxville, TN with a full aero trailer and back from Indianapolis to El Paso with a non aero trailer. 12% idle time.KB3MMX, Straight Stacks and mp4694330 Thank this. -
Haul lighter loads!

Back in the day maybe, but not with newer trucks. Very few drivers have the steady foot.
@gjcarr03 , who did you guys end up going with?KB3MMX and Straight Stacks Thank this.
