Today I saw a guy stopped at a traffic light and he went to pull out and his trailer dropped to the pavement. I've seen this happen before. Cops were blocking routing traffic around him. I felt bad for the guy. But as I'm driving past him I notice his entire 5th wheel is still hooked up to the trailer. Apparently it broke loose from the tractor. Now my question is...how does that happen?

It broke. Plain and simple. It happens, not on a regular basis thankfully, but it can and does happen. A fifth wheel needs to be maintained as much as the rest of the truck. When it's not, you risk failure of that component.

I lived there in a bunch of those crappy towns (Tuscarora, tamaqua, summit Hil, Coaldale, etc). What kind of trailer was it pulling? I've seen some real junk up there.

It was a Norbert dentstrangle unit. Looked like a new Mack pulling a fairly new trailer. It seemed to be in good shape. That's why I was surprised to see it

wouldn't it be more likely the slider got unlocked and went through the end of the rails?

    Oops! I don't know then, unless the 5th wheel wasn't assembled/bolted correctly.
