Well, History is a tough one. My degree is in business and finance, so I have had more opportunity, but as of late, things have gone sour. I have been laid off from a few very good jobs in the last 10 years, and it hurts in more ways than I care to think about. Not only financial pain, but a blow to your ego as well. To work your way up to a handsome salary and a lot of responsibility, only to be knocked down when business needs change. But that's the way of the world.

In trucking, there will always be demand, which is why I am thinking about it. However, its like any other business, it has to be profitable for everyone involved. If rail transportation increases, for example, mileage may go down in some areas of freight movement for trucking companies, and their drivers. With the cost of diesel fuel these days, it may be cheaper to run intermodal and use railroads where it makes sense. They have diesel electric locomotives, plus economies of scale working in their favor. I am wondering if any truckers have noticed a decline because of an increase in rail?

Anyways, I am getting off top. As for college, its important if one goes this route to choose a major that is in demand, such as anything in the medical field. Trucking is a solid career path from what I understand, but also a difficult one as an OTR driver as I have researched here. My friends who drive LTL seem to really enjoy it, and make a good living. That's why I am thinking about it. Plus, I already went to college, and really don't want to do it over again to change jobs, I would rather find good work instead.

Anyways, I know where your coming from though. Its a piece of paper, I agree. The real learning is in the world, on the job, in reality, not in a classroom, and that goes for most all jobs. And my hats go off to you and anyone who has served our country, you deserve a lot of credit.

    .30 a mile.

Multiply it out and it's $2450 before taxes and insurance. After those, it seems to be around $2000 a month, take home.

Looks like you're average is about 2000-2200 miles a week?
Looks like Roehl hasn't changed a bit.

    8173/21 (days)=389 miles/day average.
7days/week, yes? Looks like about 2723 miles/week. Can't blame Roehl for people wanting to sit at home and take 1/3 of the year off. They make it profitable for the company, and those who work the hometime fleets trade off some pay for more hometime.

Working only 2/3 of the year, taking home 2000/month (probably grossing around 3) puts him around 36K and 121 days off/year.

I gotta agree with you there. People on hometime fleets gotta realize it. Where you headed Cmoore? You get to fish that pond in Gary yet?

Slept last night in Gary, delivered in Baldwin, WI, and picked up this scary load right here in Eau Claire, WI, heading to Jacksonville, FL. I really hope it's secured well enough. Legally speaking, it's about 4x more secure than required, but it's one of those wobbly loads. I guess when daylight breaks in the morning, I'll give it some good turns and see what happens.

I didn't see he was on the Hometime fleets. Makes a difference.
What are the National trucks averaging now? Any idea? When I left, I was getting about 2500 a week running reefers.

Heh, I'm headed up to Eau Claire with mine. I have run through Gary and get PM (my truck turned down) done first. Hope I don't get one of those scary loads, although I should be heading home to Jacksonville, so...
