Hi, I'm just wondering how or why a company would hire a person to drive a COMPANY vehicle and pay them as a 1099 contractor? The reason why I ask is this sounds like a rip off for the driver especially when you can't claim business expenses for taxes. Please let me know what you think.

It's illegal. Do a search- quite a few threads on here about it.

Sure sign to run the other way.....

It depends on the situation, honestly.

However 98.9% of the time it's not a good deal.

We have some pretty staunch supporters on here also that will say running for someone on a 1099 is the greatest thing since the invention of the toaster. Seems shady to me, personally

If you're a deadbeat trying to dodge a baby-momma and not pay taxes it's good. But you'll have hell to pay when it catches up to you.

The only other time it's a good deal is if you're being treated like an IC. As in picking when and where you work and getting compensated fairly (30~35%) and you're good at record keeping.

Running with a 1099 is a nightmare and a half. No taxes paid out of your check. No health insurance. You have an accident or get hurt on the job, you re on your own. Most of these companies are fly by night. Junk equipment, run over grossed loads, cheap brokered loads, and draws DOT attention frequently. Not to mention a lot of these companies are also Chameleon Carriers too

bentstrider83, rachi and jlawson1979 Thank this.
