I am considering attending driving school and exploring options, etc. If I decide to move forward, I plan to pursue flatbed driving.

Today something was brought to my attention that could potentially alter my options so I wanted to ask for some feedback.

Sometime last year I was backing my personal travel trailer into the place I park it at my house. We did not have our concrete block bumpers in place and I didn't hear my wife telling me to stop. In short, I damaged the rear of the trailer on a low hanging tree limb. There was no police report filed because it was on our property. I did end up filing a claim with our insurance company due to the cost of repairs. I hadn't even considered this in my research regarding trucking until today. It is time to renew our personal auto coverage, and while quoting with another agent they mentioned that an "at fault" accident was showing up on my record. I assume they are referring to the CLUE (comprehensive loss underwriting exchange) database that insurance carriers use to share claim information. I don't believe this would be on my MVR without a police report.

First, this is not a "Disclose or Don't Disclose" question. If asked, I am happy to explain. Honesty is the best policy. However, since it didn't damage another person's property and it occurred on my own property, I would not have considered it an "at fault" accident in the context of filling out an application. I would likely have overlooked it on an application. (When the agent mentioned it, we had to ask them what they were referring to as it wasn't on our radar screen. We initially thought it might be a mistake.)

Now that you have that context, my question is: How will this affect my options as an inexperienced hire? Clearly, in hindsight this was 100% preventable and was clearly my responsibility. I had a spotter, but we didn't communicate effectively. Lesson learned.

Please answer from the perspective that this is disclosed if necessary to a prospective employer.

    Thanks in advance!

There is no way that any prospective employer should have any idea about that AT ALL. Do not mention it AT ALL. Period.

Good luck, and always remember- G.O.A.L.! Most times you won't have a spotter once you get out on your own in the Big Truck......

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I understand.

As I mentioned, if asked, I will disclose. I wouldn't want to get an unpleasant surprise at the 11th hour when a company prepares to add me to their insurance and discovers this. In that instance, they would feel that I was a dishonest employee and their feelings might change about employing me.

If they know, does it impact my options? Or is it likely to be given minimal consideration because it was in a personal vehicle on personal property? Does anyone have a similar experience?

A low speed backing accident? If only you knew how many drivers are rolling around with those on there record in a truck lol. Seriously I doubt it will be a consideration unless you do it again on the road. Then they are going to say there is a history there.

I've never heard of an employer using the CLUE database. Go with what is on your MVR and if they happen to ask about it later just explain it.

But don't say anything like, "the stupid broad is a terrible spotter!" or "she yelled at me to stop, but I'm basically deaf and couldn't hear!" That won't go over well. Just good-naturedly tell them like you told us and it won't be a problem. Especially with any company that trains new drivers. They've seen much worse and hired them.
