    Got stopped on the scale this morning at 0545.

    DOT Officer: Sir, I show you crossed the scale at ******* last night at 7:47.

    Me: Yep, that was me, is there a problem?

    DOT Officer: Well, seems to me you couldn't have stopped and completed a 10 hr break and be here at 0545.

    Me: I didn't complete a 10 hr break. Am I in violation?

    DOT Officer: Yes, you are.

    Me: How about if I stopped at the Pilot Truck stop which is less than 10 minutes from the ******* scale where I was tagged, put myself in the sleeper berth at 8 pm for 8 hrs, came out at 0400, did a 15 minute pre-trip, left the Pilot truck stop at 0415 and am now sitting on your scale at 0545 which is 77 miles later, would that work???

    DOT Officer: If you did an 8 hr split berth, than it's a possibility.

    Me: It's not only a possibility, it's a reality because that's exactly what I did, sir.

    DOT Officer: You did good (grin on face) and you got me. Have a nice day.

    That's why I run legal. These scales know where you've been and have it printed out before your even parked. Oregon and Washington had the technology 20 years ago, and now its spreading like wild fires across the country.

    True. The DOT on the west coast are borderline fanatical. They are now hiding infrared license plate readers along the interstate in the bushes. It's obviously tied to their main system and can sniff you out when you cross the scales.

    That is why I don't care if ELD's are mandatory. There are many ways the authorities can determine where you have been in the last 7 days. Most drivers don't have a clue.

    Maybe he wasn't expecting you'd do that. I've run into quite a few drivers who didn't even know there was such a thing as split sleeper logging, and even fewer who knew how to do it (at least, without getting themselves into trouble). Probably 90% of the drivers he runs into only do the standard 10/11/14 so I imagine he was basing his encounter with you from that experience.

    I'm sure he wasn't expecting that. He was nice enough and neither of us were confrontational. You gotta know though he was peeing his pants thinking he got one ;-)

    They can see as far back as they want. Just because my truck was rolling and my log book shows off duty at home doesn't mean I was driving it. Which is exactly what they can't prove.

    Ooooh,are you going to be in for a surprise when they pull up your picture, YOU in your truck, with the crossing time on it.

    They've had that capacity in Washington for at least six years. Went around and around one time with an inspector, pictures came out -- until he realized I was logging central time. I almost felt sorry for him......

    Most places they log the truck. In WA, they have more data.

    Make sure you truck numbers dont match in your log. That would take some explaining in court.
