Some brokers would say, it pays really good money, almost 2 bucks a mile.

I did a load today, leased to a company. I think we get 75% plus 100% fuel surcharge. The load was 137 miles, and it paid $485 to the truck. Oh, company trailer and no trailer rental. No tarp, too! Loaded back. Around 250 miles round trip.
You'd have to be an idiot to touch that load.

485 $ on 250 miles and you're bragging? I pull a dirt cheap load every once in a while too but I certainly don't brag or use it as an example of a money maker.

I live in NH. A few years ago we were expecting a hurricane which never happens. A local meat supply company loaded up a refer and wanted it hauled to a safe area 5 miles away. I told him $500. He absolutely freaked out. He was told $2.00 a mile is excellent for NH. He was expecting to pay $10 for me to haul it.

With a storm coming in he ought to have considered it a bargain if anyone was willing to bother for $1,000. If he had ever really tried to cover loads in a scenario like that he would know that a $1,000 was a bargain. A van load around here going 5 miles would probably move for $200 all day. I quit doing anything for less than $500. It's just not worth the hassle, headache and you can only rarely build a $1,000 day out of 2 of them anyways. I did a load to Spring Hill, TN General Motors plant a couple of years ago that was 5 miles and paid $650. The broker only wanted to pay $300. The problem was some carrier tried to deliver the freight to the plant in a trailer that was older than 10 years. He was turned around at the gate the delivery was refused. It was dropped at a cross dock just up the road.

I did end up spending most of the day there. The trailer brakes were frozen and it wasn't registered so I had to wait for a mechanic and them to go to the town hall to register it. He didn't call me to haul it back.

No, it 137 miles. For the full 250 it is close to $950. I think you missed the part where I said "loaded back". You're right, $485 for 250 is no reason to brag.
