Yep, living in Northern Idaho. I hear what you are saying about the jobs being very different. Most of the locals I have looked at require at least 6 months experience, and my personal feeling is that there is no better experience than OTR. Call me crazy, but I have wanted to drive since I was a little kid. I believe regional would be a better name for what I would want to get into. I cant see fighting traffic, and bumping 8-10 docks a day in town keeping the BP down! Lots of good info so far, and I appreciate it. Thanks TripleSix, looking at Systems page now!

It's all about what you want. I love local city driving, some people hate it. I don't think I would like living in a truck otr or regional, but to each their own. But my advice is if you can, hold out for the job you want. If you don't want otr don't take it just because it is easiest to get. You can get regional or local or whatever from the start. Like I said just apply even if they say they want experience, a lot of times there are exceptionsSnoman Thanks this.

Beware of companies who aggressively advertise and recruit, as well as sign-on bonuses.

So what are you saying, cre and swift are not good companies?

Here's some to check. Ignore "experience required" because many companies bend their own hiring rules for a good applicant.
Lynden (www.lynden.com)
Carlile Transportation
Doug Andrus Distributing - Idaho Falls,ID
Leavitt's Freight Service
Already mentioned are System Transport and Magnum Ltd....both good outfits.
Get a passport and TWIC ID Card. Google for nearest TWIC office.
TWIC is for entry to military bases, chemical plants, rail yards, sea ports.
Passport is for Canada. -
@ Snoman they have 3 divisions that fall under Tran system Inc. Sytem is the faltbed they have a reefer and tanker division. Reefer is mainly the 11 western states and canada so is the tanker division. They do have dedicated and regional that even new drivers can join. They also have there own driving school which you must be a resident of Washington ( there head quarters) Idaho or Oregon to attend there school but you wouldn't if you have graduated from sage already. They hire recent cdl school grads as well..

Ignore "experience required" because many websites are either not clear or not up to date. If you see a company you like; apply.
Submit applications now; don't wait until graduation. The best time to submit applications is during the first week of CDL school.Last edited: Nov 13, 2015
