I am a new driver and got my cdl a year ago. I know my downshifting is going to be rough during the test. I'm going to be rusty. Is that something I should worry about? I heard that Swift will take anyone, but I've also heard you can blow it on the drive test. I'm wondering if anyone has seen people sent home because of a failed drive test. It's going to suck if I can't get this job

Aren't they sending you with a trainer? They should.
-
Yes they are sending me with a trainer, but there is a drive test that Swift does on day 1 of orientation. They are aware I have no experience and I'm coming in as a trainee.
-
Odd, but at least it's expected you'll be rusty. I wouldn't worry so much about it.
-
Where are you joining up at?
-
I would think the day 1 test is to determine if you have to go through Swift's school before you go on the road
-
They're just checking to see if you can get around the block and maybe back a little without killing someone at this point. Teams are cheap labor for them so you'll get in a trainer's truck if you kill no nuns. That's where you'll get your practice and then maybe a second, more stringent road test.
You know: both hands on the wheel, always set the park brake, triangle placement, proper use of the coffee cup holder. No sweat.Bob Dobalina Thanks this. -
I've never drove for swift but road test is a road test.they won't send you home on a couple bad shifts as long as the tester doesn't have u pull over and he drives back to the terminal you'll be fine.

Swift doesn't "take anyone," their liability carrier won't allow it. (don't get too excited, anyone, I'm pretty sure Swift has their own coverage. It's a metaphor. )You'll have to pass the driving test, like anywhere else. If you fail the test, what would you expect them to do? Yep, that's what they'll do, but you can probably re-test at some point. No worries. Just take it easy. No company I know of is going to put you in a seat without some kind of skills evaluation. As Aaron Rogers recommends, relax.

3 months passed for me after school when I got my 1st job. Even in that short of time, I was verrry rusty to say the least. Shifting doesn't become an ingrained skill until you've done it for a while. They know that is the case. So if you are accepted by them despite having a year gap away from school, they will take that into consideration. But prepared for them to want to put you back into their school as a refresher despite the fact that you already have a CDL.
My sense is that they will be more concerned with other driving habits than shifting skills. As @Hick said, "kill no nuns". Well put.TROOPER to TRUCKER Thanks this. -
Yeah it seem like a big plan for an excuse to get you in there school and locked in.
