Hey. I have lived in the US for nearly 3 years, and am considering getting my CDL A in the new year (January 2016). I am originally from Northern Ireland where I held a CDL B license for nearly ten years and have experience driving across Ireland, UK and Europe, both commercial and humanitarian aid,
I am currently going through a divorce and the only reason I am staying in the US is because my son lives here, otherwise I would return to Northern Ireland. I love trucking and I love the prospect of being able to see more of the USA as well as earning decent money in the process.
I have my son every other weekend from Friday 5pm to Sunday 5pm, and on the other weeks from Thursday 5pm to Friday 5pm. How difficult is it to find a trucking job that will cater to those hours?
Is it true that the recruiters will make big promises that rarely come true? Which companies are the most truthful and reliable to their word?
Thanks guys.

You're not going to find a company that caters to those dates.the closest you'll get is regional where you're home every weekend but not the same time week after week.loads dictate the drivers hours and days.also while in training you'll be required to stay out with a trainer the entire time and get home once u go solo with your first load.those days and hrs you gave are part-time quick trucking is not.

Post the area you live and people can help you more. It looks like you need to look more into the ltl and food service in your area or loose time with your kid to go otr.

I'm in Knoxville, TN. I was thinking more like dedicated routes that I would know for sure how long I would be out for at any given time. Still trying to figure out how it all works over here!

The bigger problem for you is the thur-fri weeks. That's gonna be #### near impossible to get worked out.
Still, at best you're gonna find even with 'home weekly' companies that the hometime generally be between 34-48 home and the times in and back out will be very inconsistent.
Even on dedicated routes nothing is consistent or 'for sure' with regard to times. You're completely at the mercy of shippers/receivers who could care less what your hometime needs are.
The best bet for you as stated above is finding an LTL outfit, food service or maybe beverage runs like a soda or beer distributor. The problem there is that most of them require prior otr experience. Not all of them but most of them. The classic catch 22 of needing experience to get the job but can't get the experience without going otr.
Get out and knock on some doors and call around and ask about requirements and hiring. Knoxville is a good area most of us run through there a lot with 40/75/81 running through the area a lot of freight moves through there. I doubt you'll realize that dream of getting out and seeing the country with those scheduling restrictions but if you want to drive I'm almost positive there are more local options in that area -

I should think you need to drive local. Doesn't help see the US but a dedicated route even a consistent one is never going to be absolute if you have someone who can watch the lad if your not going to make it back home then the dedicated route might be ok, most our drivers get home every weekend if they want but when during the weekend can change according to events beyond anyone's control.
