Man I was really trying to not think about this until I got home,.. but now you have me curious. I'm sitting at a T/A waiting on a shipper to call back. Think I'm going to plug in my second pigtail and hit my aux buttons and see if it does anything. If not,.. I've got some 12 gauge wire,.. I can jump off one of the leads from where my inverter is wired into the batteries for a 12v source.

    Dang you! :p

Plugged in the second pigtale and hit the aux switch,.. a quick short burst of air from the back of the trailer.

    So I am still confused.

The rear sliding axle is the only one that air dumps out of it. Not the front. The rear axle doesnt lift,.. its just there dead like a limp noodle.

What is the purpose of only dumping 1 axle? Trying to think of a situation where that could be useful and drawing a blank.

    Anyone?

7th grade,.. Wendy Dillion,... I was in love,.. well seriously infatuated. She had some knock out hoo hoos at only 12 and 13 years old. She always had a single or double pig tails,.. and I used to tug on them and tell her how soft and beautiful her hair was. She hated my guts,.. but that never stopped me from trying to get with her. Amazing what raging hormones will do to a kid.

Turning, backing, any place your skidding tires, taking the weight off one allows those tires to slide as opposed to skid and takes the side-load strain off the suspension, frame, wheels, axles etc.

When you dump the air in that axle, it no longer bears much weight, and allows turning without much, if any, damage to the tires, when the rear axle is opened to anything other than the closed tandem setting.

Hard turns scrub the tires on a closed tandem, too, and there have been times a dump axle would have helped avoid damage.

An old Hyster three axle RGN Lowbed that I used to run had air ride with a regulator on the third axle, front two axles had walking beam. So you could change how much weight was on the last axle, no lift on it though. You could really change the turning point. Made getting in and out of tight jobs a lot easier...

I think you'll like it when you wish you was shorter!!!

@catalinaflyer covered this; and well. I am not sure how you have participated in this segment of the industry for as long as you have and still unaware of the usefulness of dump valves on a spread. Now that you know........I am pretty sure you'll like it!!

    ^^^^^^

Mr Hurst, if you had this setup on your truck, on the rear axle for example, it would really aid you in tight quarters, as your trailer pivot point would now be on the front trailer axle. You could probably make u turns that USA drivers dream of.

I got into this old school days,.. trucks I started with didnt even have air ride.

I returned 15 yrs later with my old school mentality. Sink or swim. Try all the buttons,..figure out what they do as I go. If I dont know what it is,.. 'Eventually' I'll figure it out or someone will S'plain it to me.

I've only pulled 3 other spread axle flatbeds,.. all within a 1 year period before I got this step deck. Before this,.. I never pulled a spread axle.

This is the first step trailer I've ever owned. I bought it from my carrier who doesnt know what half the stuff he has does. He buys it because someone told him thats what he needs. Usually the Polish guys who own a shop and repair trucks. He hires a driver,.. asks the driver if he knows what all this is,.. if you answer yes,.. hired,.. here's the keys. As long as your MVR and CSA are clean, insurance likes you, he'll hire you. I never even got a test drive. He told me that my last employer was so furious with me and had so many bad things to say,.. that I must have been a good driver for him to be that upset with losing me.

Before this company I never did flatbed,.. EVER. I winged it from day 1. Learned everything the hard way. I did 12 months with a tyrant who took advantage of guys in my position, I pulled a reefer for him. Before that (15 yr absence from trucking), I drove a 1974 IH with Spicer, 1980 Mack with the hi/lo twin stick, both pulling 45ft and 48ft fixed axle RGNs. Then ran 1982 and a 1993 IH wrecker and roll off. I did nothing but towing and moving equipment. Thats my background.

Never worked for any mega,.. never went to trucking school, never took a refresher, never had a training class of any sort. I learned everything from watching and figuring it out on my own. I'm a pretty resourceful guy with enough common sense to figure most things out. If I dont understand or cant figure it out. I ask or leave it alone.
