pining the flywheel

passenger side. you will see a plate with two bolts in it. one of the bolts is longer that bolt is what you use to pin. there will be a hole right above that plate. it may have a pipe plug in it. just take the plug out and insert the long bolt in that hole. put a little pressure on it while you rotate engine until it falls in the hole in the flywheel.

 

DONT USE THE STARTER to rotate engine. use the gear that goes in that hole the plate is covering or use a breaker bar and socket on the front of crank.

 

Just like super hauler said. Once I find TDC the first time (#1 or #6), I put a mark on the crank damper. The when you have to go a full turn (or the next time you work on the truck and have to find TDC), you can have someone watch it and let you know when you're getting close. That way you can crank easier with 2 hands, then when you get close slow down and hold pressure on the bolt to find the hole.

I have come across a few where there wasn't a hole (which I think may have had a bolt broke off in it). Most engines do have another hold on the drivers side, but it's hard to get to with the starter there.

 

The cover with two bolts holding it is the cover for the barring tool that engages the teeth on the flywheel to rotate the engine. The small hole is where you insert the bolt to pin the engine #1 or #6 TDC. I always liked to jack up RR, put truck in highest gear, release brakes and have someone roll the tire while you're pinning it. Then, like somebody mentioned above, use a paint marker to mark the dampner where the fan belt "intersects" the dampner and you won't need to pin it except for timing purposes....the mark you put on the damlner is close enough for running overhead.

Gonna ask the same question, kinda scary pinning the flywheel to work on the truck if your not sure how to pin it to start with, gonna run an overhead?
