I'll sign a commitment letter when THEY do, guaranteeing my income, miles, insurance rates, etc.

This is an at-will business and they can fire you at any time for any reason. I'll be GD'd if I will EVER sign a letter committing to anything more unless THEY sign a letter with an equal commitment to ME.

Exactly right. Sure they have APUs in their trucks but still.

Can you please copy your "commitment letter" from Palmer here? I, and I'm sure many other members of the forum would appreciate it.

They never sent me the form since I didn't take it any further. They just told me over the phone that I would have to stay with them for 1 year otherwise I owe the training cost. Not bad mouthing them by the way. They are a good company from what I hear.

That's what I hear too, which is why I would like to see the actual print of the "commitment letter" they wanted you to sign.

Palmer/Wil-Trans wants you to work for what I consider an extreme period as a new driver at VERY substandard wages on the promise that they will pay you much better later.

I actually applied with them when I didn't think I was going to get into System and was told they wouldn't be able to compete with System Transport, so never mind. (I have Hazmat and TWIC clearance + zero tickets so it wasn't my record).

I was promised basically 16CPM based on team for 150k miles then 45 CPM after. Only reason I was looking at them was pet policy. Money-wise, what I got from them as a new driver out of school was slightly better than I could have got from SWIFT/CR England IF that.

    Lightside Thanks this.

I dont blame you for not wanting to go to Jim Palmer but they want something out of this for training you.you do know western is one of the worst companies dont you?and you may not even last thru their training your goal is to stay a year so why not keep shopping around.Schneider. has a tanker division have you talk to them?

Palmer didn't mention the contract for you? Must have had a better CDL school. I have thought the one I attended was possibly subpar at best (actually it was pretty bad. Teacher would yell at us if we made one little mistake, distracted us from driving) and he was rarely, if ever in the yard when we were using the trucks to back. I applied at System but was told my work history was too spotty (record is clean).

I did check out Schneider. Tanker division is out of my area. I was set to go with them dry van but thought their trucks were pretty poor and the recruiters barely told me anything about what to expect. Couldn't park truck near home either.
