eh, it wasn't intentional...your question representing your idea wasn't formed clear enuf. I was thinking about your comment on the hobby farmer, whom has invested a considerable about of time and money to produce 225K lbs of product & my own contact with men whom work with their hands while possessing simple & direct language.
The small business owner will make far more Cold Calls. (did that help)

So you are saying you were offended by me using the phrase hobby farmer? That's funny consudering most the farmers I know call themselves that. Some of them have crop fields of five hundred acres and they still think of themselves as hobbyist. no farmer I've ever encountered would feel that term is insulting or condescending, they have thicker skin than that.
And btw, none of the dozens I know deal directly with the truck carrier. my comments in this thread have been based on actual hands on experience as a small business reefer carrier. Tho I suppose it could be argued I wasn't very good at it cause I went back to flat beds after 5 or 6 years -
Lets discuss what your stating:
1), isn't shipping to a grocery chain. Your not limiting your interpretations to a specific farmer but making a generalization about all Hobby Farmers. Each Farmer will work to find buyers. To sell to Chains, the greatest gravity deciding this will be the use of a specific Hybrid being grown.
2), he's selling locally...no trucking needed...road side stand. Stupid, again the farmer may or may not need the use of the truck. The farmer may need the use of a truck simply to bring the crap in from the field.
3), hobby farmer flip out, quote a "real truck rate". Stupid, Your point of view, is not to strengthen the revenue to the trucker but you recommend using a broker....I can feel it. I believe, the Farmer will try to keep his operational costs down. What can you do to insure his product will be in best form. Myself, I'm getting the impression, you want to run the truck quick and finish this contract as fast as you can. Myself, I'm developing a growing disgust. -
Myself, what I like about the hobby farmer is LTL shipments. Pack n Stack, then add more freight onto my truck. i.e. Buffalo, Ny. have a LTL shipment Fri-Mon load, rate 3K, then, add a couple of pallets of apples, extra revenue $1,250, drop apples before the 3K drop, myself, I'm working on track to better than a 9K week, (my best week is even better. 9k week avg, month, month, after month.).
Brainiac, I don't believe, you used a hobby farmer as LTL.

Myself, I have a growing disgust for your language...perhaps, that's why you found it hard to work directly to a hobby farmer. (Farmer got turned off). As for myself, I've worked loads thru brokers into a Hobby Farm whom stated directly to me...call me next year, Farmer stops using Broker to work direct with Trkg Firm. A three card Monty begins. (several times...yepper). why, why, why...would that happen...musing.

Thanks for the replies. At least the ones that were on topic.
It looks like I'll probably stick with dry van at least for now. When I do load searches there are a lot more dry van loads in my area than reefer.
I plan to keep checking out reefer freight opportunities.
Still looking for more information on van verses reefer so more posts would be appreciated.
Again thanks. -
Let's keep the bickering out of it please.
spyder7723 Thanks this.
