The trailer is your money maker and the tractor is your money pit. From what I've seen there's a helluva a lot more good paying work out here for people who have a wagon than there is for people stuck with power only as their only option.

There are some niche operators who do power only. It involves it's own headaches. I post my truck up daily for power only just to take in calls. I have people call from 300 miles away sometimes.

Recently someone wanted me to move a construction tool trailer from KY down to LA. I don't think I've ever seen a road worthy tool trailer sitting on a job site before lol.

There are all sorts of potential headaches. Seldom are they ever willing to pay that big round trip number that bobtails me right back to the house. It's best to have a trailer and be working that. If someone calls with a power only that's willing to pay then leave that wagon at the house and jump on it. I have done before myself, many times, but not recently.

Anyways, when you start calling on posted power only or you see the posted rates you'll come to realize very quickly how poorly it tends to pay and why if you're not booking round trip rates you're gonna end up scooting around the country for a buck a mile.

Of course I never say anything out here can't be done. There's always someone who can figure it out and make a person eat those words. But I would say the deck is REALLY stacked against it especially in the current market.

Power only with your own authority, you should be looking at US mail carriers this time of year. They'll be begging for additional capacity. I did well pulling pre-loaded trailers for John Ritter out of Laurel, MD out to Minneapolis a couple of years ago. Back then it was a bit better than $2/mile, live unload, and you find your own back haul to load on their trailer. No pressure to get back either.

Yes, there are usually a lot of extra loads running because of the holiday mail crunch. Can't hurt.

    this ought to be good

Local post office "hello how can I help you"

Womanintrucking "I am an owner/operator and was wondering if you have any freight to haul"

local post office "excuse me this is the post office can I help you with anything"

womanintrucking "I was told you have good paying loads to haul during the holiday season. I would love to help you out

local post office "we have a special on priority mail right now, large priority mail box anywhere in the US for $14.99

womanintrucking "How many of those will fit in a 53ft dry box?"

local post office "we have unlimited capacity, we can ship as many as you would like"

womanintrucking to herself (wow this is a gold mine, i could fit thousands of these in a 53ft trlr maybe i should quote her %20 of the load) Do you provide trailers?

local post office "if you have a trailer full of priority mail boxes we can make an appointment for you to drop them off but we normally don't handle that many at one time"

womanintrucking "wow they have nobody that can handle this freight I am going to buy a brand new truck right now and get this going

womanintrucking "USPS sucks they feed you all this bull about good freight and then leave you stranded" DON'T WORK FOR USPS
