CB for dummies

There's a guy on ebay that sells them brand new in the box unopened for the same price..

That guys only asking 35 bucks for his. Even though it says hi-z, all you need to do is remove the impedance transformer and you'll be back to 150 ohms.

 

I think I would probably trust this one more. The other one says it was stored improperly which might mean water damage but this one looks totally clean on the inside of the box.

Something no one has mentioned yet , but many love the 29s and Uniden 76s... as do I. If you can find an OLD model of oNE of these it's worth your money to purchase it if it's in decent shape.

The old ones were made in the Philippines, while the new models are made in Taiwan and just aren't as reliable.

That's my opinion , and many others as well. I'm sure plenty will disagree with me , but I'm a firm believer in this.

I've got a 29 and a 76 over 25yrs old and they still walk the dog. Tough pieces.

CB Radio. Hell, can’t really afford guns, cars, women . . . but feeding the geek is fun.

 

By online lots of stores have online stores dubbs CB shop and Walcott radio I’ve dealt with both very happy

 

If you want to talk long distance get a radio with ssb

 

It offers 3x the output of a regular cb.

 

Don't need SSB for this stated spec: "...not a hardcore CB guy wanting to talk to someone in the next county. I just want something that will work good, transmit and receive clearly, and be useful for road conditions, scale info, etc."

SSB is nice for someone who wants to talk to the guy in the next county, but it costs more to buy those few radios that have it.

If I had $200 to spend, I'd buy a good radio for $50-$100, and spend the rest on a good antenna and coax.

 

Nobody has asked the most important questions.
.1. what is the SWR readings for your setup on channels 1,19 and 40?
.2. what is the length of your antenna?

.Please do NOT purchase a Cobra model 18. Lousy radio.

.Basically, the following setup will do 2 to 4 miles maybe a little more
A. stock radio (even a compact radio). More expensive radios are nice but not necessary.
B. single antenna five foot in length or even a Francis CB25 4.5 foot antenna. 4 foot antenna length is absolute minimum.
C. an SWR of 1: 2.0 or lower. SWR of 1:3 or higher is an absolute radio killer. Lower than 3 but higher than 1.9 needs tuning.
D. 50 ohm coax that is just okay. Even RG58 is satisfactory. Some people love RG8X or higher but the cheap RG58 is perfectly adequate.
