Headache racks

@truckdad . I remember when I was little dad was having a hog barn built and the electrician had his phone wired up to the horn and PA speakers. His van would start making a racket, scare me to death and then he'd come running. Funny thing that electrician is still in business and doesn't answer his phone for anything now. Guess he has enough work

 

@truckdad What was the winch for?

 

Winching on dead equipment mostly.

 

Makes sense, run over the gooseneck and pull things over the rear?

 

The Cat dealer was my big customer, I HAD to be able to bring in the dead stuff.

 

@johndeere4020 This trucks winch was PTO driven, it would pull til "something happened". Used this in the oilfields for winching up portable steam generators, baker tanks, mud pits etc. Probably used the winch average once a day. The battery box was the place to stand while running the winch & if you look close you can see( 2) 3/4" steel rods standing vertically, one has the ball bearing knob missing. These slipped into the control rod for the clutch & gear control. I winched on a dead D-9N over the back of my 7 axle once with this truck. Line was parted of course with the snatch block I always carried. These were great times, I miss them.

 

That's a powerful winch! I dread hauling broken down equipment but it usually makes for a good story.

The DM I used to run, had an actual clutch pedal mounted in the deck plate, right where you stood, where your battery box is, and the air valve for a reversible PTO mounted on that edge of the cab guard. we could power out, or in. As you said "It would pull till Something Happened!!!" good or Bad.
A Few times I wasn't willing to stand on the deck next to that loaded Line!!! So I'ld climb in the cab to run the clutch, but would need someone to flip the air shifter for me, then hide! This is also a good example of where having a trailer capable of tail loading would be so helpful. We used to break the trailer then turn around and back up against the back of the trailer to pull stuff on, not convenient, but very affective!

 

Any Kind of Rack can Look Cool when done well and taken care of!!

It really depends on what you primarily Do???

One move a week and the cabinet will be nice,,,,
Or curse your frozen binders in the open rack!!!

Five moves a day and you'll be ripping the doors off that PITFA of a cabinet!!!
Or hang em in the open where you can grab and throw!!!
Use them enough, they won't get rusty!

It comes down to your time and efficiency...
