My CB repairman replaced something he called a pre-amp (maybe a mic- pre amp?) He did great work, and this is not a complaint about him. But I do prefer the way it sounded before as I've heard on other magnum S series. I much prefer the loud low talking volume as if it was a base station <---if that makes any sense.

Any suggestions on where I can find original or was this always a faulty component?

    Why did he replace it?

    Was it broke?

I'm not sure if it was broke, but I do know the talk-back was muffled, and he said he didn't like what he seen on the scope. After he replaced it the radio was crystal clear (I should be happy right!)... No, I use to get compliments on the big radio, but now I sound like a barefoot Cobra with a really nice mic, btw range is unaffected.

A few guys I run with say it sounds nothing like other Magnums they've heard. I don't use echo and played with the modulation and power knobs. So my thinking was, did my CB guy replace the pre-amp specific to Magnum with another brand or electrical rating?

In order to understand what he did it might help us to know who he is.

If he removed the Top Gun modulator board it sounds like you might have found one of the few technicians in the country that knows how to do decent work.

LMAO, the first thing he did as soon as he opened the radio he removed the modulator board... "This has got to go" I think were his exact words. But it did sound the same afterwards. It was another visit later that he replaced the pre-amp.

I don't want to name him for fear others will take what I'm trying to say as negative about his work, cause the guy truly does do a great job. I'm just at a loss of words for what I'll be asking him to replace it with when I visit again.

As long as it sounds crystal clear it sounds like you found yourself a decent technician

Im not familiar with inards of a magnum 680, but the "pre" amp should be within the echo board of this radio. A pre amp is exactly what it sounds like, pre amplified audio before it reaches the audio section of a radio. An amplified mic acts as a "pre amp", for example...
With that said, did he change the entire echo board? Or maybe just a couple components within?
The echo board also contains the talkback circuit, which would explain why he was lookin there to begin with...

It was a single component, small and black, like a transistor.

I just looked up preamp circuits, and appears way more complicated to identify than I thought. I guess my question now should be, does anyone know where to find the schematic with component list?

They used to come with a schematic from the factory that was included in the box originally I don't know if the new ones still include the schematic or not though.
