With the CAT IR 0716 oil filters, and most other oil filters, the info says tighten to hand tight, then use filter wrench to go the next marked spot on the filter, in other words go from 3-4 or 1-2 and so on. To me that doesn't seem tight enough, and I probably go overboard tightening the filters which make them hard to come off.
Anyone go strictly by the recommendations without problems? I actually heard of a filter unscrewing on the road and dumping the oil.

Edit : Just found out I've been misinterpreting the little illustration on the filters for the last 20 years thanks to @swaan. Doh! But I've always done the filters up my way, so no loose filters.

I'm on the same line of thinking as you. I'd rather put some muscle into it when I have to take it off than have it leak or fall off.

I've always oiled the Oring on new filter and installed as tight as I can get it by hand.
I only use a filter wrench to remove the filter.

Most smaller filters, if you follow the instructions, is about an additional 3/4 turn after hand tight. That's pretty tight as far as filters go. I've always spun them on snug, then an additional 3/4 turn. Which is about as tight as I can get them by hand, but I usually use a filter wrench (I've slipped and banged my knuckles too many times). The big Cat oil filters call for 1 turn, so that's what I do on those.

I've never had one come loose (knock on wood). I have had some that someone put on so tight that the wrench crushed the filter getting it off.

You'd think the mighty cat would have a torque spec for them....

Generally I go 3/4-1 turn past the point the gasket touches the filter head. I usually use a strap wrench because I can't grip the filter tight enough with oily gloves or hands. As long as you keep the wrench at the top of the filter and don't go full stupid on it, it shouldn't crush. Worked with a young lady who refused to use a wrench to tighten the filters and every one of hers would loosen off and leak within 2-3 days.

I oil the new gasket on the filter and put it on as tight as I can get it by hand, knock on wood but never had a problem when doing it like that. I only use a filter wrench when I remove the oil filter.

Hand tight and 3/4 of a turn and forget about it.

Well, they do, sort of. Hand tight then turn to one of the numbers on the filter. Kind of like the torque-turn method of tightening main bearing caps....sort of

If you go by CAT's recommendations of hand tight then tighten to the next number printed on the filter, then that's not even 1/4 turn and that doesn't seem enough
