Yeah, it def could be weak transfer pump, or collapsed filter, clog in line. It sounds like a fuel issue, I keep thinking that b/c you said the truck started to run strong. A timing issue, or charged air leak will not come and go like a fuel issue will.
3406b missing allen screws from pump??

Yeah that's what I was thinking as well....I bought a new transfer pump and that will be going on this weekend as well as new filters again and the only line I haven't replaced. I also bought a new hand primer pump to replace the old one. I was in Florida making a delivery and had a mechanic that was familiar with 3406b's tell me that there are check valves in that priming pump and they can go bad which will cause a power loss. Something along those lines...

Once you get this problem panned out, there are three parts you always need to keep in your truck for these old B model cats. 1) spare fuel filter
2) fuel pump solenoid 3) fuel pump primer. Can't tell you how many times over the 30 yrs of driving my 359, one of those 3 things caused issue. When you have the part the problem is fixed in less then 20 mins and your back running. When these motors were designed they were built to be fixed by the operator.
The 359 is a super reliable truck and the b model cat is just as reliable.seth Pivarnik Thanks this. -
What is the fuel pump solenoid? Is that the transfer/lift pump? Yeah the motor is great and one of the main reason for buying it is to work on it myself. Grew up on a daily farm and we were always fixing our own equipment so I wanted to be able to do the same with the truck.

The fuel pump solenoid is bolted right on the back of the pump with two bolts. It's only job is to open the pump when you turn the key on, and close the pump when you turn key off. If the solenoid goes bad the truck simply shuts off. It has a plunger with a spring wrapped around the shaft, when you put power to it, the solenoid pulls back on the spring, when you take power away it releases the spring closing the pump off.

Okay ya the shut off solenoid I gotcha. Thanks for your help and advice I appreciate it!

I would say the screw is still in there with the cap-head destroyed. No torque-rise screw in there it would put the passenger mirror on the ground when it started and be aggressive as &@&# from then on. Almost undriveable, much like a leak in the afrc only much worse. A 3406B 425HP was considered "within spec" between 18 and 22psi. 15psi is what a good 3406B 350HP Fuel Saver would run. I've seen a pump looked like that before, after someone with a 3/8 drive ratchet and almost enough information had been at it. Apparently the jamb-nut got left out of his instructions or something.seth Pivarnik Thanks this.

Had the screws out of my pump more than once and never had anything like you describe.

Okay so changed the transfer pump, primer hand pump, filters and fuel lines this weekend. The old transfer pump, the shaft that goes into the injection pump did not move at all as compared to the new one which moved quite easily. All the fuel lines are new except the line from the tank to fuel water separater because that line looked like it was relatively new, didn't look original like the others. So all that was done and got the same results. No power change until after 100-150 miles. Then same as before start pulling a slight grade and instead of stopping at 16lbs of boost wide open it creeps up slowly to 20. Then up the next hill i have 24-26lbs of boost quick boost and will creep up to 30 on a longer pull. Got to my delivery, unload, leave make 20-22lbs empty getting back on the highway then stop at a stop light and taking off from the light im back to low power again. And after I have this drop from full power level its lower than normal like 11-12lbs boost full throttle compared to 15-16 I was getting before I get the power boost. So I'm not sure what else it could be. The only line I didn't change I blew air back into the tank to make nothing was clogging it since it pulls from the bottom of the tank. The other thought I have is the diaphragm I had is somehow leaking boost around it so I don't get full travel then it seals up and I get full power. Is that possible?
